Question on negotiating

   / Question on negotiating #11
It seems to me that regionally, there is not that much negotiation room, unless you happen to have a dealer or two in your region that tries to sell at retail. For example, when I shopped for my last tractor, I turned to the internet and asked for quotes by e-mail from Kubota dealers within 200 miles of my home. The prices I received was usually about the same (within several hundred dollars), except for two dealers, whose prices were considerably higher than the average price quote. If your getting similar quotes, its probably best to assume that your seeing the best current prices for your area.

However, a lot of TBN'rs will tell you that price is not always most important, because sometimes it's more important to go with a dealer that you like and is going to meet your needs. Such as someone who offers free pick up and deliver for service, or other perks like giving you your 50 hour service for free with the purchase of the tractor, or may be able to give substantial discounts on implements that you need, if your purchase them with the tractor.

While your shopping, inquire about these things, because the dealer may not be able to move much on price, but he may be able to give you other things of value in exchange for your business.

To determine if your getting a good price, check outside your immediate area for quotes, you'll be suprised how much the prices may vary from region to region, and how far some dealers may deliver.

It also appears that tractor dealers have no issue with holding onto inventory for a long period of time...I've found several dealers recently who still have new 05 units sitting on the lot...

I believe the pricing varies greatly geographically.
When I purchased my L3010 the prices varied 15% between about 8 dealers in Northern Oregon and Southern Wa.
The same was true when I purchased my BX1850 last month.
My dealer-same for both tractors, was willing to get within in $300 of the lowest. He threw in 10 gallons of S-UDT and got the deal. The highest was about $1200 more then the lowest.

Purchasing heavy equipment is a different ball game than purchasing a vehicle. I call around to several dealers and get a quote to compare to my servicing dealer. If they are much lower he will match their price.

One must remember the relationship you have with your tractor dealer will be much closer than your car dealership. Most dealers are small operations and attempting to beat them out of a buck is redundant. The after sale service is paramount.

So the moral to the story is to allow your local dealer to make a decent. fair profit on the sale of the tractor. Then hold their feet to the fire on after sale service and accessories.

People ask me all the time what I think "A good deal is?" I always tell them if YOU feel like you got a good deal, then you did. If you have a knot in your abdomen then you most likely got screwed or spent way too much money for your budget! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi! this is my first post. In my area, I have found a huge difference in tractor prices from dealers. I checked five different Kubota dealers for the very same machine. The range in price is unbelievable. I finally decide on a dealer, which happens to be $1,810 less than my dealer in the county, for a L3130DT w/Quick attach LA 723 loader, filled R-4 tires and delivered to my house. I could not believe the rock bottom was almost $2k difference. What do these people think? I'm not going to check on prices! Kinda makes you feel like going and asking them what the heck, are they trying to not sell the tractor to me.
