I have a new John Deere Series 1 diesel subcompact tractor. Question, what would be the biggest size rear blade I should attatch. I have been thinking about a 5' blade. Thanks for reading my post.:

I picked up an old 72" rear blade for mine. I had every intention of cutting it down to 60" before I used it for snow removal. It depends on your intended use, the size blade a scut can handle. I have a 48" box blade for dirt work, so I'll leave the 72" blade alone for snow removal. For dirt work however, I believe the 60" rear blade would be best. Check out these vids for one series rear blade action:

zI agree with a 5' for dirtwork and a light 6' for snow. I use a 5' for my 749 and it is a good fit.

If you intend to move any wet snow, or lots of soil, then you may want to have that blade set at 30 or 45 degrees (about the vertical pivot). Measure your rear track, from outside sidewall to outside sidewall. Take this measurement and divide by .866 for 30 degrees or divide by .707 for 45 degrees. This will tell you what size you need to cover your wheel tracks set at that angle.

eg: rear track = 47" set at angle = 45 deg
47/.707 = 66.5" So at least a 5.5 foot, more likelya 6 foot would do.

Depending on how much weight you are trying to move, and how much traction you have, you may want to go shorter. Or you may want to add rear chains or ballast (or both) and go longer. Your call.
