They were set to default. The manual was easy to follow and the programming procedure was easy.
I left the BPTS at default inorder to let the HP run at all outside temps and changed the AHLS down to 20 degrees, that way, if'n I ciphered it right, the gas furnace won't cut in unless the outside temp drops to 20 or below, or when the HP calls for defrost or when the thermostat is set to emergency heat.
Depending upon comfort, I could go lower but will have to wait for colder temps before I can determine the best balance between comfort & economy.

On a side note, this new Puron system seems to run more in AC mode but according to my records it uses less electricity. With this in mind I won't sweat the HP running more in heating mode as long as it can keep up with the demand.

I'm still curious about having the thermostat located above the main return. That is where the original one was and where the new dealer put the new one but, I did read a little blurb in the downloaded manual that indicated to locate the thermostat on an inside wall AWAY from any registers AND the RETURN(s).

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

If it is by a supply move it, if it is by a return it typically is not a problem. The return is your most accurate reading of the temperature in your house if it is mixing air from more room than one. Example we typically put a double return that handles living room, kithch, dining room. Then we have a return in each bedroom. So in most of our installations you will see the stat on the wall by the return. This is the same way our competitors do it also.

The thermostat is above the main return. I have two returns, the main (20x25) is upstairs in the main hallway and I had them add a small one (12x12) in the basement in the foyer to increase airflow when heating, which it seems it did. I cover the downstairs return in the summer as the basement runs colder than upstairs.

Update:
This week has seen temps avg in the high 40's and drop into the 30's during the night and I've been monitoring the HP & furnace and I've yet to catch the furnace working. Unfortunately I didn't take a meter reading so I can't be positive. We're supposed to get our 1st frost so I'm going to take a reading and see.

This Carrier HP works differently than the Rheem & Sears models I've had previously.
There are times when the compressor will run but not the outside fan. I'm not talking about defrost, I'm talking about when it's in normal heating mode. When it does this I'll go to the nearest register and yes it's putting out heated air. To verify it's not in defrost I'll then go to the furnace and verify that it's not running, which it isn't. It's done this since I've had it and I don't think anythings wrong. I figure it either works of off that outside thermostat or it has another sensor that determines when the outside fan needs to run. The outside unit/coil is HUGE! It's easily twice the size of my previous HP's.
In anycase, adjusting the AHLS down did the trick! And the HP has been keeping the humble abode a toasty 70 which keeps the Mrs happy without eating up that natural gas which keeps me happy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
