I'm thinking about fabbing my own Grading Scraper like this one:

I've noticed that they all seem to have two hardened cutting edges, HOWEVER, most are designed so that only the front edge actually does any cutting. The rear edge seems to only be used to build up a little dirt so that it can be deposited into any holes the scraper encounters.

Question: Would it be ok to just have ONE hardened cutting edge?

May I ask why it is that you think that the rear blades don't do any cutting? :confused: Mine sure do, both of my blades are 1" below the side rails. I often need to tilt my grader backwards so that the front blade doesn't take a full bite. I think that if you wanted to you could get by with only 1 blade, but I am pretty sure that it won't cut wash board out anywhere near as good. You might as well just use a box blade. I don't think that all these manufacturers just put them in for looks. :rolleyes:

I was thinking that some of the units I've looked at only have the front cutter sticking below the frame. The rear cutter is level with the bottom of the frame. I was thinking that if the front cutter is the only one actually doing any cutting, I could just use plain angle-steel for the rear without mounting a hardened cutting edge to it. Seems a waste to put a hardened cutter on the rear if it's not doing any "cutting".

Of course, I could just be having one of my "moments" and all the units I've seen actually do have the rear blade protruding from the bottom of the frame!!! Stranger things have happened.

My rear blade is set a bit lower and shares the cutting duty. My front blade is also toothed. I also did the poor man's hardened edge by using mild steel and welding a bead down the cutting edge.
All in all it's like this;
My first cutting blade is toothed and set down 3/4"
Second blade is not toothed set down 1"
There is a third blade set up 1/2 " I use that to carry material for the low spots.

Well, I just ordered the raw materials to build the grader. All metal 1/4 inch thick. Should be a heavy little sucker.

I use my home made grader blade on the 900' driveway and will be using it this comming winter. It will do the 180dg to level.... Works well thus far..

I live in Beaufort, SC and love my Duragrader. Feel free to come by if you are in the area and take a look or make some measurements!

Make it like this instead (with hydraulic teeth).

I'm just about ready to start welding the scraper together. Where is the cheapest place to order a Cutting Edge? King Kutter wants $105 plus shipping for just the 72" Cutting Edge that they put on Box Blades and Scrape blades.

Any suggestions? Links? Etc?

I COULD do like a previous poster and weld a bead down the edge of the metal to harden it and do without the real life honest to goodness certified USDA Grade #1 Cutting Edge if I had to.
