I was looking for a grain drill to plant a few acres in grass. During my search, I ran across this old Ontario Grain Drill, model 857. It has the wooden box and all. The drill appears to be in outstanding condition. The wooden box still has the red paint on the back.

What I want to know is, could this drill work planting a few acres of grass? What should I be looking for and what are the disadvantages of this drill over newer models. I know one thing would be parts.

I know a newer drill would be better but, I also like old farm equipment and have a few pieces already sitting under one of my sheds.

Thanks in advance for any help or constructive comments.

Well, PS, I've never even heard of the Ontario drill........I had to do a web search to even get an idea of them.

Wooden box? Whhhheeeeewwwwww.......from what I can find they were built in the 1960s or so???

What to look for: the seed delivery system. Does it function right? Is it greased and working? Drills will have a system of chains and gears that mechanically drive the agitator that moves the seed to the bin openings. Are they free and working?
