Questions about TC40A VS JD 4120

One thing also to consider is the QA for the bucket. JD is brand specific, where NH is more universal with the skidsteer arrangement. I agree also about the prices for the NHs. They are way high. You were quoted a price for the TC40A, that only slightly less than I paid for my TC48DA with R4s, 18LA, QA, heavy duty bucket, 1 rear remote, filled rear tires, block heater,36 mile deliverly. The JDs have the sloping boom, which increases operator view towards the front when doing loader work. The Ergonomics of the Deere are the tops, with in my opinon NH a close second, if not tied. The 148 cu. in. engine in the Deere, with 22 to 1 compression, and direct injection is the best arrangement for fuel efficently. The addition of the large hydraulic pumps on the Deere tips the scale. Without a large price break on the NH, the Deere looks the best bang for the buck in your area.

Thought I should point out that Deere is offering a skid steer QA option on their 300cx, 400x, and 400cx FELs. It is about the same cost as the skid steer QA option on the New Holland.

Depending on what attachments you want for the Deere, many are available from Deere and other OEMs with the proprietary Deere QA (buckets, grapples, snow blades, pallet forks, round bale forks, etc.). If you think you'll only ever need attachments already available in the Deere proprietary QA format, buying the SSL QA isn't really necessary. And it beats the standard pin on format on the New Holland.

Still, if you don't mind paying for it, a SSL QA setup gets you pretty much ultimate interchangeability for FEL implements.

well i drove a TC34da? tractor around for a day, moving two loads of top soil into the back area of a house, ran it in 4wd the whole time, i liked it, but like others have said, it couldnt curl back the bucket when trying to lift it, that would bother me if i paid 20k+ for a unit.

When going after a full scoop of dirt I always roll the bucket back - that's common on FEL's. Even the big ones used on a large earthmoving project.

This one makes me chuckle. If you think about it, if you don't back out or curl, you are not only picking up your bucket full, but also a large chunk of the remaining pile.

Also I ran a NH 758 backhoe on my 2120's internal hydraulics for over 10 years and there were plenty of hydraulic flow for it. I usually ran at a little over half throttle.

I have been looking at this class of tractors for about a year now. Still haven't bought (a broken A/c and new septic have swallowed my downpayment). Have not had any real world use of the JD 4x20s or the Kubota Grand L series. I have used a NHTC40DA w/ loader and a Kubota L3400 w/ loader around my place. Here's what I learned.

-The NH has great "ergonomics." Everything is where it should be and it's comfortable to operate. I also like the overall look, but everyone has their own preference on that.
-The Kubota was a lot more "basic" but did everyhting I asked of it and more. I did get a little pissed when an exposed fuel filter broke when hit by a branch and started blowing diesel everywhere. It should be recessed a little better.
-I have about 11 acres of coastal and the NH was a ROUGH ride with the loader attached. I've heard that it's a little better without the loader, but still maybe not the smoothest ride for mowing. The Kubota was smaller, but rode better, so the ride had nothing to due with my property. It may have been a ballast issue on that TC40, though. Still wanting to try out a 4120.
-As far as cost goes, when you compare apples to apples, you are generally going to be within 10% on price with the major brands. That being said, JD is USUALLY highest, NH lowest, and Kubota in between. This can vary widely by area.
-If you are financing, the longer term rates are generally lower with NH and Kubota. I think they all currently have some form of 0% financing right now.

Hope this helps. Let me know when you decide and why.

Where did you find this price? I was just quoted a TC45DA w/16L, R4s, HD Bucket and 2 rear remotes (no fliud in tires and no block heater) for $24,700 in southwestern Illinois.

For the savings you described, I could do a long road trip !!!

I just bought the 4120 last month. Hydro, 400x FEL, Power Beyond....$23,300.
I was very impressed with the loader power. When you enter a pile of dirt or gravel(drive your level bucket into the pile) you must rock the bucket back(to get a full load) and raise. Now, if your too deep in the pile you may have too back up a few inches as you raise. If your going to do alot of loader work...get the Hydro! I had a gear Kubota I traded. I could'nt be happier! Oh, when I'm in my Case 580K, I don't have to back up any:D , HTH.

BTW: The casings on the NH are not aluminum. You should always take comments like that from a competing dealer with a "grain of salt."

Deere uses aluminum axle housings on the 2520...

Another thing to consider on the 4120 is that it has Deere's new Power Tech engine coming out of Mexico. I've heard (yes it is heresay, but from a reputable source) that the water sleeve is poorly cast and water gets into the oil. Heard this a couple time actually, but never seen it myself, so take it with a grain of salt.

The Deere 4020 and 3020 series sort of "straddles" the NH TC40/45. You can get 37 or 44 hp (3020 series) tractors that are smaller and lower spec'd than the NH for about the same price as the NH... or you can get the 43 hp (4020 series) model that is slightly bigger slightly higher spec'd for quite a bit more $.

I have used 2 TC40DA (friends) and loved them both. Smooth, easy to use and powerful.
