Tires Questions on BX series tires

I was wondering if anybody might be able to answer some questions about tractor tire sizing and nomenclature. I am looking into buying a BX23 and have been posting a few questions on this board that have helped with my decision-making. The tire sizes on the BX23 are listed as:
front - 18x8.50-8
rear - 26x12.00 -12
What does each of these numbers stand for? I am familiar with automotive tire sizing but not tractor tires. I am curious about this because I had been comparing the BX23 to the Massey GC2310 and it's tire sizes are listed as 18x8.50-10 and 26x12.00-12. Why the slight difference in tire sizes? Is that last number in the front tire the number of plys in the tires? What got me going on this is one of the responders to one of my previous posts had wondered why Kubota did not put front tires with more plys on the tractor when they were available. Another responder indicated that his front tires were pancaking pretty good with a full load in the FEL. Since I am thinking of ordering both Turf and bar tires for this tractor I was wondering whether it might be smart to get the tractor with the turfs and then go and search out a heavier duty set of bar tires than what Kubota would supply. I will using this for some heavy digging and a lot of FEL work so I would like to have the heaviest duty tires I can find for that.
Does anybody know a place on the web where I can find tires in the correct sizes for this tractor? I also want to get at least the bar tires filled. Is this something that can be done by me or is there some special gizmo that the the dealer has to do this? Thanks for the help.

Since I put this bug into the ointment, I guess that it is up to me to get it out. The first number indicated the tires overall diameter, the second the overall width, and the third, the diameter of the hole in the center, where, what is commonly know as a rim is installed. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif The tires that Kubota issues with the tractor are suitable for the use that it gets. In the few events that you will put more into the bucket than normal, the tires will flatten out somewhat, but it isn't a problem and if it really bothers you, you can have them foam filled. The 8 ply tires that I know of are turf tires and are sold on one of the on line tire companies. I don't think that it is worth the cost difference because Kubota sells their tires quite reasonably. The front bar tires are not a very common commodity. For filling the tires with ballast, try to get that in the purchase price. You can do it yourself if you purchase the filling adapter, but why do this when most tractor dealers will throw this service in for free. Since you are near the NH border, check with Pinnacleview Kubota in Keene for a price. I know that they are usually quite competitive and will throw in a few of the freebies that you are looking for such as filled tires. Don't forget to ask for your Kubota hat. Good luck with your quest for a new BX23. I know of 4 right now in a dealership in RI, 20 miles from the MA/CT border.

I got the turf tires (filled at dealer at no costs to me) with my BX23. I was thinking of the final lawn when making the deal. I have 1 acre of rough clay land in S. New Hampshire and didn't think that the turfs would be a problem for grading and loader work. If there is any moisure in the air or the ground, the turf tires just spin though. If you are planning on using the loader right away, I wouldn't have the tractor delivered with the turf tires.

As for the Loader, you can overfill it (it can handle a heavier load than expected), the tires will depress. I've learned to take it easy and not overload - I plan on having the tractor for many years so I'm not in hurry anyways.

Aside from the spinning tires, the BX23 is a great machine.

I don't think I could go to the turfs on my BX23. The bar tires offer so much traction and with very little turf damage. The wide bar tirs on the BX series are absolutely terrific for traction, I am continually amazed by the loader capabilities.

Yes, as a "Best case Scenario" I agree the turfs are best for mowing. But if I were to own only one set for all BX23 work, it would be the Bar tires.

I agree! I purchased an extra set of tires/wheels in order to have the turfs for mowing. I have never put them on the tractor! The bar tires are perfect for all my use, including the mowing. I'm sure some folks with "manicured" lawns might need the turfs, but for my 4 acres of yard, the bars are no problem. Guess the smart thing would be to sell the turfs and wheels. Agree...but I only own one set, the bar/turfs. The BX23 was originally delivered with turfs, but I swapped them out after only about 10 hours. MAJOR difference in performance when using the FEL, etc., and no damage to the lawn when mowing unless it's way to wet to mow. (And then it's "my fault", not the tractor's) The bar/turfs really made a big difference when moving snow this past winter, too. With the BH on the back for weight, there almost wasn't anything that would stop that machine!

I ordered my BX2200 with both bar and turf tires. The turf tires spin if I'm doing things other than mowing & am on wet ground. The bar tires don't seem to damage the turf in the least. So, I keep the bar tires on all the time and have an unneeded set of turf tires stashed under the house. Recommendation: get the tractor with the bar tires only; if you're really dissatisfied with your mowing results, you can always order extra turf tires & rims later. It's easier to purchase them later than it is to sell them later. (& even if you can sell them, you won't get your full value back.)

I agree with Tom, I have the bar tires (filled) on my 2200 and as long as I am not agressive when mowing and use only 2wd, the lawn is fine.....In addition, when plowing or snowblowing, I don't need chains and hardly ever spin the tires......Also, when mowing, I don't leave the fel or weight box attached....
