Um, I guess I didn't explain myself well, I was concerned that it could move by itself under an angled load..........regular all-thread rods have so much friction from poor threads that it would not move unless you turned the handle, but an acme thread is smoother. I guess it would be like a vise thread tho, probably couldn't move on it's own........

Hi Mith,
Here's a shot of the overall unit. Keep in mind this is a cheap Chinese leveler made under the Lorcin name.

This is a closeup of the transfer bar, and screw drive. The extra holes in the transfer bar let you re-distribute the center of gravity for an out-of-balance load.

Here's a shot of the "L" brackets to attach your load to the leveler.

Hope that helps you out, if you have any other questions, I would be glad to try to answer them for you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS. Most chain that you buy is labled "Not for use with an overhead crane", or something similar. I don't know whether this is a liability issue or if in fact gravity is more efficient when an object is suspended from above. But anyway I would use grade 70 or better chain just for piece if mind. Plus you don't need that much chain, so it won't be too costly.

Have Fun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow man, thanks so much, very VERY helpful. So useful to see how all the bits happen.
Just one question, would you change the design atall to improve it, more length?, more adjustment?, more capacity?

Thank you VERY much! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As someone else mentioned, it would be nice to have bearings on the ends of the screw drive to decrease the friction when you crank it. I don't think you will have an issue with it creeping as there is plenty of friction to keep the drive screw in place.
We have an old adage over here that we call Moore's Law. It goes "If some is good, more's better". Depending on your intended useage you may want to increase the capacities of the various components, but there is no point in making the leveler a higher capacity than your hoist, or you may destroy the hoist. This one has enough adjustments to suit my needs, but your mileage may vary.
BTW, I added something to my last post that you may find useful.

Cheers
