Traction Quick Traction Tip - Farmer Style

I was telling my story about getting stuck to some of the boys at work and hearing about when they also got stuck. One guy got stuck down by "the swamp" while collecting maple sap. So he got the bigger tractor to pull out the little one and, you guessed it, got that one stuck too.

His dad came down with a couple of short 2x4's and tie down straps. He basically ran the strap through the spokes of the rear tire and strapped on the 2x4. This was done for each rear tire being careful to leave enough room by the fender for the 2x4 to clear when the wheel spun. When the 2x4 dug, out popped the tractor. Slick as could be. I would imagine that a hunk of log or a branch from a tree would work too if your stuck in the woods. It's so simple it's brilliant.

I am going to get a couple of tie down straps and keep them in the tractor's tool box from now on!

I had heard similar stories from my dad about his younger days on the farm. He said they used to use the wooden fence posts to do exacty what you describe. He also mentioned you had to be careful not to dump the clutch to fast or you could flip the tractor over as it tried to lift itself out. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif ...And I always thought he was just telling fiction stories. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I'd be careful with that one. If the board should flip off the wheel you could end up with one he.. of a goose egg on the head or worse yet. Just have to be careful.

I almost got decapitated by a board under the dual back wheels our bobtail moving van. The driver backed off the edge of my road into the gumbo (almost turned the thing over). Here I am at the back with my little B2710 FEL lifing up and pushing forward while my son is pulling on the truck with my 4x4 Suburban. We had put some plywood and stuff under the front of the rear wheels to try and get some traction. That plywood came flying out of there about 90 mph straight backward into the tractor where I was seated. Fortunately it bounced off and didn't come up in the drivers seat. That would have ruint my day.

I was just wondering....

Is it possible to mount a winch to the front of a tractor? Never seen it done, but it sure would be easier to pull the tractor out of ditches/mud/etc. Assuming of course there was something to hook it too.

Jon, the idea of mounting a winch on the front of a tractor has been discussed here before, but naturally I don't remember just where to find it. If I remember right, to summarize, it is occasionally, though infrequently done, and the main consideration is the high amperage draw of most electric winches.

It sure is. I have a friend/neighbor that does a lot of trail work for the local open space district with his B7100. This little tractor is nearly perfect for trail-making and trail maintenance. He tends to go quite a ways out, and has his little 'bota all set up for the task, including a winch, lunch box, and spare tool box. He has on a few occasions gotten himself into a little pickle, and used the winch to pull himself out.

Yep" I helped my cousin, get his AC-5 track loader unstuck, he was building a pond. And swamped it, we chained 4x4's to the track's. It killed the motor, a time or two but it walked up out of the mud!!!
