Quiet Air Compressor?

Been there, done that. It's especially fun if you have a cheapie craftsman '6 hp' (one of the ones covered by the class action lawsuit, by the way) that is not only loud but slow to fill.

I'm guessing, but the only one I recall hearing about was their ridiculous overrating of horsepower; i.e., calling them 3 to 5 horsepower when they were actually nowhere near that. In fact, some that were called 5 hp in the past are now called 2 hp.

And yes, I've been there, done that, myself; i.e., hearing an air-compressor kick on in the middle of the night. So now I'm more careful about making sure mine is turned off when I'm not using it.

Screw-style air compressors are supposed to be quiet - well, quieter than piston style compressors. They are more expensive, but also produce more air (CFM) from the same motor as a piston style compressor. They also tend to leave a residual amount of oil in the compressed air.

I was impressed with the one that was on our building site when the spray-renderers applied our render. I tried running their rig on my own compressor (similar electric motor, dual piston pump) and it did not have enough CFM.

It did make noise, and I would house it in an enclosure.

I bought one from sears last summer that says right on the front cover - 40% quieter. And I believe it is. It has a 30 gallon tank, runs on 120 volts and has about 5.5 cfm at 90 psi.

I have a super quiet small air compressor made by Makita. Its a portable but it is pretty heavy. It turns at half the RPM of conventional compressors. I love it. It is easily the quietest one I have ever heard or not heard. Amazon has it listed and the comments about it are superb.
