Quirks I live with

And naturally, recently they've worked flawlessly without any extra effort. I think they like cool weather.

Bird, about 14 years ago I had similar problems with round fluorescents in my kitchen fixtures in my Grand Prairie, Tx house. I decided to do an experiment when I noticed they seemed to not work during periods of peak power use. I checked the input power from the power company and found they were dropping voltage to reduce power consumption. Some days I had power coming to my house that was only 102 volts. As soon as the voltage went back up to 108 or above, the fluorescents were not a problem.

That makes sense, Jim. I used to keep a volt meter plugged into one of the outlets in the RV because low voltage can damage some things.

However, after I said the lights have been working OK recently, then yesterday, 7 came on and one did not. I tried the trick with the broom to no avail. But flipping that one switch off and back on brought all the lights on.

So, just now I went out there, flipped both switches on, 3 lights on the north bank came on, none of the south bank. Current voltage was 222. I flipped the south bank switch off and back on; nothing happened. Flipped the switch off and on once more, and all 4 came on. Flipped the north bank switch off and back on 4 times; same 3 light came on each time and one did not.

That definitely qualifies as a quirk :confused2:

And a short time later, I went back out there, flipped both switches on. All the south bank lights came on, 3 of the north bank. The same one did not come on. But I walked out back, got the lawnmower from the garden tool shed, brought it into the shop, plugged in the battery charger on it, then flipped the north bank light switch off and back on and all the lights came on.
