Last Sept had a routine blood test done as it had been a few years, anyway A1C was over 10, fasting Glucose 180. After Dr. visit who said I should be getting insulin shots and go on diet and excise program. The next day went cold turkey on what i call a no GPS diet - No Grains, Potatoes, and Sugar. Started walking around 3 miles a day(Target 10,000 steps). First few weeks were hard. 6 months later the blood work all normal A1C 5.9, glucose 95 and now 50 lbs lighter. Weird feeling after 20 some years having to buy smaller paints sizes.

 Good for you Dave!

Carbs are sugar, or rather sugar is a carb.
I think half the battle is not calling things what they are: Example: Instead of saying: "Would you like some ketchup for your hamburger?", Say "Would you like some (meat) sugar on your hamburger?"
"Want some sugar sauce on your spaghetti?", etc..

...don't mess with the sugar lobby though. Powerful enough they use to get the use Gov't to overthrow central American governments for them at the turn of the last century.
Ever notice how every ingredient is listed on a product, along with the how much of the product supplies of your "Recommended Daily Dosage %" for calories, iron, sodium, etc.... EXCEPT notice that there is no "Recommended Daily Dosage" listed for sugar. Hmmmm....why is that?

My understanding is that while too much sugar is bad, at least when you eat natural sugars in fruits, you're at least getting fiber with it that regulates the shock (and insulin production) that your body experiences.

I smoked cigs, cigars, and pipe for 50 yrs, always more a nervous habit, but if I didn't crave the nicotine I loved tobacco as a way to embrace it. Red man or Beech nut if I was relaxing like during fishing or mowing's hours of virtual inertia. I was so sure I could never quit, but when a nice Doc asked me to, I knew that keeping a promise could get me to do for someone else what I'd never do for myself. So I stopped using all forms of tobacco around 2 1/2 yrs ago, Dec 22nd, 2016 was my last day.

I may never have to go through the difficult process of 'quitting' after all. Love how one humbles the boastful, by adding, "I smoked for 50 years and quit over two days a few years ago. What was that big special unique thing you did again?" I do stuff because I can, esp if/when the younger and stronger can't. (an Oakie apocalypse is incipient, mates).

Growing up in the 70's in south Texas I had friends who dipped skoal and copenhagen. We were about 10-12 yo. All it took was me trying Skoal and about puking for me never to touch chewing tobacco. Tried smoking cigarette at that age and same thing. My one "vice" is coffee. I can drink a pot a day if I'm not careful. I'm tried to move toward cold coffee.

I do not believe that (coffee) caffeine is simply a "vice".
It is actually a drug!
