They dont sell ROPS!!!! They sell roll bars. No certifications needed for a roll bar.

That is no where near the price I was quoted for ROPS for a Hinomoto E2304 I once had. I went to my local AGCO Allis dealer and priced a ROPS for a Deutz Allis 5220. It is nearly identical to the 2304. Their ROPS was $2200. I guess they were paying for the liability insurance.

$2200?? Those guys were dreaming weren't they /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
I'm not going to pay that much for some fancy word (ROPS). I think I may get some heavy metal and start doing some fabricating. I'm only speaking for myself, but I don't give 2 flips about them meeting government requirements. I'll tell you this my friends, I believe some heavy duty metal and an excellent welder, would make a far better roll bar than some company literally skimping to barely get by the government standards. Hey, this could be a business venture. "Roll Bars by JCooper" /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Tell me about it. My wife is an attorney. She fills my ears with cases after cases. I fill her ears with nothing but tractors, tractors, and tractors. What a relationship! Anyways......I've seen things homemade built that I'd bet my life on, would be stronger than most store bought gizmos. But you are correct, the mfg. would be liable.

I don't think the law is usually the deciding factor. You get some idiot behind the wheel, they do something dumb and get hurt. Then they sue somebody using a lawyer that will tug at the heartstrings of jury. Here in Alabama I read about a case that took place about 10 years ago. Two teenagers were riding there 4 wheel ATV on a public road with no helmets when they wrecked the ATV. One kid ended up a vegatable. The other suffered minor injuries. The jury found for the plaintiff for the sum of either 7 or 9 million dollars. On my 4 wheeler there is a warning decal that says NO PASSENGERS, another that says DO NOT RIDE ON PUBLIC ROADS, and yet another that says ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. What is wrong with a jury saying the kids were wrong? I think too many people are trying to cash in on the lawsuit lottery without taking personal responsibility. I am off my soap box now.

The ROPS question reminds me of one of my favorite questions.... which I think of as "How can a society encourage innovation?"

A ROPS isn't rocket science. Any average engineer could design one and back it up with the calculations in a couple of hours. And even the worst of those designs would be one heck of a lot better than no ROPS at all. Many people would benefit. But not one engineer that I know is stupid enough to do such a thing. And worse yet, our society thinks that the engineer is pretty smart for turning down the job! Something's definitely out of whack with that kind of system. Not so far out of whack that we can't fix it, but it is probably time to get to work.

Like roger says, something is better than nothing. If you are a good welder some 3" pipe along with some factory 90s or 45s as needed is overkill. My factory one, for a 336D is made from 2" sq. tubing, but it is probably alloyed. If your on one of the smaller models 2" pipe should work. I saw a homemade one on the old site under homemade equip.
