R4 vs. R1 rant

I have R4s on my 4500 an cannot believe how much worse the traction is compared to R1s in mud/muck.

R4s are a compromise between R1s and Turf. They are designed for both traction and mowing. Since they are a compromise, obviously they can't do either task as well as the originals.

R4 is the Swiss army knife of tires. I wanted to swap out for turfs but once I looked into it I realized the fronts would no hold up to a full bucket load. And I mow with it so r1's are out. I'm just careful in mud and have chains for the snow. Compromise

And like a swiss army knife, it isnt really a good knife, it isnt really a good screwdriver, it isnt really a good "any one thing specific", rather a compromise.:D

A Swiss army knife isn't really good for anything.

"A Swiss army knife isn't really good for anything." except generating revenue for the Swiss. :)

Well... That was my point. Will it get the job done. Yeah. Does it suck. Yeah

Strange remarks. This JD is my first tractor with R4s. The four tractors before that had R1s. The tractor before that had R3s. They positively sucked. But I don't see that the current R4s are any better or worse than the R1s before them. R1s are for working in the dirt and suck on hard surfaces. R4s simply gave up a little aggression (in dirt) to improve working on hard surfaces.

I never seen a case where the R1's were on a smaller diameter rim in a 4wd application:confused:

On my 955, R1s are on 16" wheels and the R4s are on 16.5" wheels.

Thats odd:confused2:

I guess some of them are like that.

On most tractors that are just a shade smaller than your 955, like my L3400, the R1's are on 24" rims and the R4's drop down to a 19.5" rim, but are about 3" or 4" wider.
