R4\'s on the highway

I've seen a lot of posts talking about R1's wearing out quickly on the road, in comparison to R4's. My question is, how bad is highway travel for R4's? My wife keeps getting me into these situations where I have to drive 10 miles each way to till a friend's gardens.. which I don't really like because it's a constant strain to watch for traffic behind me, pull over periodically, and so on. But I'm also wondering how much wear I'm putting on those R4's while doing this?

It's a JD4300, if that matters...

Thanks,
Bob

Re: R4\'s on the highway

Im quite sure the R1's wear at a higher rate than the others but, I have driven My New Holland from our (wifes) house to our (my unocupied) house to my mothers house at least 4-5 times a year since 1997 @ 7miles round trip and to the car wash once @ 8 miles round trip and can hardly tell a difference in the wear compared to new. The R4's should show even less wear. Rear tires are at about 85-90% and front tires are about 60% due to the tight turning circle this tractor provides. ALWAYS in 2WD on any hard surface except once when my friend decided to move tractor and engaged 4WD for some reason and I pulled onto road and drove about 100 or so yards.

Re: R4\'s on the highway

Just figure that wear and tear into what you charge to till the garden. Problem solved.
But as to wear, nothing to sweat really.
But if you don't want to make the drive, just say it won't happen again. Simple as that. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks guys.. one thing I can scratch off my "to worry about" list.

As for charging.. if I charge even one red cent my insurance doesn't cover me. If it's just a favor, no money changing hands, then I'm covered. Which was very fortunate when I took out my neighbor's swimming pool.. but that's a story for another day. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
