Rabid Raccoon

For the most parts, racoons are nocturnal. Yes, they do very rarely come out during the day, but most old folks can count on one had now many they have seen during the day in their entire lifetime. And, every racoon I have ever seen during the day (three, maybe four) were walking around in circles and falling over. It was not due to them eating fermented fruit, either. They were diseased and our county humane society took care of them in a humane fasion... they killed them as painlessly as possible in a gas chamber. If I would have had a firearm AND it was not in a populated area I would have ended their suffering myself.

About ten years ago, I lived in a pretty populated area. Our neighborhood bordered two of the largest roads in the area and the average lot size was 1/4 acre. We had street lights and the school bus practically emptied the entire bus on the corner one house away from us (lots and lots of kids). The first time we saw a racoon in our back yard during the middle of the day, I called animal control. They, in no uncertain terms, told me they would do nothing about a healthy looking racoon out during the day. They said it had become perfectly normal for racoons to be out during the day, primarily due to us - eliminating their natural habitat, etc. We had repeated racoon sightings while living there and one of them took up residence in a tree in our back yard and had a litter.

There's a big difference between this and the original post - the original poster's racoon was acting sick. But the 'any daytime racoon is sick' is no longer a strict rule everywhere, according to animal control in my neck of the woods.

What absolute rubbish, raccoons are not nocturnal.

While they are usually more active at night, many will venture out during the day ~ particularly females foraging for food who may have a litter of babies back in the den.

Do you have food at your stand, baiting animals? Is that even legal where you are? All baiting is illegal here.

Seems like you just want to kill something for the sake of killing, shame.
Baiting for anything is illegal in New York State. There was no bait involved.I have lived in the country all my life';and hunted and trapped,I still say any Raccoon seen during the day is a problem.I have dispatched "TWO" THAT WE SCRATCHING AT MY FRONT DOOR",TELL ME THAT'S NORMAL.I don't enjoy killing anything needlessly.I put electric fence around my bird pens so I don' have to trap "coons"

Each one has to be evaluted on a case-by-case basis. Its pretty obvious when you see a racoon and it runs from you or trees itself that it is probably O.K. But when you see them walking around in circles and falling over, something's up and it should be checked out.

We see them during the daylight as well. As far as scratching at the front door, yes since our neighbor thinks it's so cute to feed them cookies. I've told her it's very likely she will be bitten and a raccoon can do some serious damage to a hand. I don't really appreciate people feeding wild animals at their houses. I'd have probably shot the one the op was referring to as well, it did sound as though it was sick.

In my part of central Maryland, Raccoons found roaming around barns and houses during the day are reportedly rabid in about 70% of the cases. Those stats came from the DNR, when my wife pinned a raccoon with a pitchfork outside the barn. It tested positive and in conversation with the DNR officer, he informed us of the statistics for our area.

Inform her that there is a good likelihood that they may be carrying Raccoon Roundworm - and ensure she understands exactly what it is, and what it means ...

Maybe the idea of her own or a loved one's brain or other internal organs being being devoured by internal parasites because she accidently disturbed some raccoon crap in her yard that one of those cute little coons left a few years ago will give her second thoughts on the wisdom of attracting them ...

I will add my thoughts, unrequested as they were.:D I was raised in northeastern NC and on a farm by the woods. Coons doing more than darting from one cover to another near populations of people in daylight are normally well, not normal. It's not rare in that area to see them sometimes along the edge of a cornfield in a wooded area in daylight, but they will run away if they become aware of people, dogs, etc... There are no absolutes but daylight action in the open would have my finger on the trigger, just in case.
