One advantage of the one in your drawing is that it could double as a torture device.
Mmmm I don't know... it's no more wacky than the linkage on the back of a backhoe bucket. From a manufacturers standpoint, hydraulic cylinders are cheap and fast. Linkages are simple, rugged, and virtually idiot proof.
