I replaced the water pump on my FX28D and forgot to put the fan shroud back on. I think I can just loosen the radiator connections enough to slip the shroud back between the
radiator and fan., But I'm wondering if the shroud is really needed - it seems that the radiator and fan would actually get more air from the side vents without the shroud, and the
fan side of the radiator would definitely have easier access for cleaning - any thoughts on this ?

If it wasn't needed, manufacturers would drop it like a hot potato. They cost too much to just put them on for nothing. You need the shroud!

You need the shroud to direct the airflow thru the radiator.
Its a safety issue, too. Open a hood with an engine running and the fan shroud missing and get too close, that fan'll rip your shirt off.

Thanks for the responses - I guessed that the shroud might be necessary, but wanted to be sure.

Anybody remember the first generation flathead Fords? The distributor was below and behind the fan. Setting timing could be brutal.

I think 9N's were like this too.

I thought that probably wasn’t important on my truck after got done changing a water pump. Nope, it overheated within a few miles.

So is my 49 8n BUT same as a 2n and 9n, the timing is set on the bench w the distributor removed from the tractor so not so brutal

A few of my timing lights show the fan marks. Some models of car are near impossible. Seen a few guys lift the car and take the front wheel off the front wheel drive land yachts. First of the Taurus I believe. Crazy.........

In cold weather startup, the shroud also acts as a pre-heating conditioner grabbing warm air off the engine thru the radiator to turn the slush anti-freeze back to a full liquid. It could help you in TX as the ice-age moved in there this year. :p

When i was an apprentice mechanic over 40 years ago, I left the fan shroud off the company's delivery van as it was a huge pain to get on and off and I was the only person servicing the thing regularly. The delivery driver couldn't complete his rounds the next morning cos the thing was overheating. I got a well-deserved reaming but learned why the shroud is there.
