rail road ties for fencing

/ rail road ties for fencing #21
I have used rr ties, been good till now, currently using telephone poles. (got a bunch free). One thing I do though is I treat each one with creosote driveway sealer, airport grade, at home depot for about $20 for 5 gallons. I always coat the "cut" ends. If you cut a rr tie you can place the cut end up and treat it. I had a nieghbor do it that way in the late 80's, he sealed the top with thick roofing patch and cut the tops at a slight angle for runoff. His fence is still going strong.

In the H brace post we used 2 3/8 steel post as the cross member

When the ground is too rocky to dig (often), we make rock jacks.

We take hog panel and bend it at 90 degrees, making a 3' or 4' square box.
Set that open end up and down, and fill it with Idaho. Never rots, stronger than posts.
