So I wonder why it was a narrow guage?
They started out to build as narrow gauge. At one point in the book they discussed converting it to standard. In reality, very difficult terrain to cover, lots of hills etc.

From everything I've read over the years, narrow gauge was less expensive for a number of reasons. Tighter curves allowed shorter distances. The rails were usually lighter weight, therefore less expensive. Heck, even shorter ties add up to $$ when you use millions of them. There are a number of narrow gauge rements around here. I think most were used for logging.
