Rail roads and their tracks.

I was binge watching videos of people that frequently travel on Amtrak. More than one of them has said never book a flight at your destination anywhere near scheduled arrival time.

Part of the problem with Amtrack is they no longer get a priority. The owner of the tracks, usually a freight train company gets to decide who gets the track. If Amtrack is on schedule it’s not a problem. When we took the train to Denver there were a couple of old Pullman style cars attached to the back. These were cars for a private party, food and drinks for a large group. They dropped them off in Omaha. You’d think that’d take ten minutes but it took an hour. After a while you spend a bunch of time sitting on sidings waiting for freight trains to pass.

Most routes aren't owned by Amtrak, so they have to work their way through the freight train traffic, which I think isn't run by a schedule.

Several comments to remind us that taking the train isn't for everyone. Schedule vs scenery vs ???

I've taken long rides across international borders and appreciated the extra time when papers were checked, hanging with the friends I made while promising we'll keep in touch.

Trains have more room to move around than planes or buses, other cars to check out, and you can still look out the window if you can't sleep. Just sayin' ...

Trains Magazine:

2 men rescued in B.C. canyon after train derailment

Two CN crew members have been rescued after spending seven hours trapped on a steep 50-metre embankment after their train derailed early Thursday morning in the Fraser Canyon. Neither the engineer nor conductor were seriously hurt, suffering only cuts and bruises. They managed to scramble out of the locomotive. But they were stuck on the embankment above the Thompson River because it was too steep to climb. Blankets and hot food and drink were dropped down to them for the night. At first light, rescuers climbed down on ropes to pull them to safety.
They brought the engineer up just before 8 a.m. PT, and the conductor followed a few minutes later.

Long story here:

The Twin Ports our first sign of spring is when Duluth-based USCGC SPAR WLB-206 begins breaking ice for the start of the shipping season. The Soo Locks open on March 25. Here the SPAR backs out of Howards Pocket after cutting a path to Fraser Shipyards. Two CHS switchers made for a nice rail and sail combo. Superior, WI - March 10, 2025
