First measurable rain amount for me this year. According to our local news, we are almost 5" below normal for the year.

So far I am at just over 1/2", not much, but very needed here. More on the way.

Also had our 1st Tornado warning, yet unconfirmed officially, S.W. of Weatherford Texas.

Further West is the biggest wild fire in Texas history, that is what they are saying, probably only since Texas was settled. Last I heard, the largest fire had covered over 140 sq miles. A pipe cutter started that one. 8 others burning, all out of control as of today.

Here we are drying out and you poor guy's up North are flooding.

Yeah, we got 1 1/4 inches one day last week. It was much needed. Seems all the rain & storms miss us and and start up in Louisiana and move east. They've had some really bad storms. We can do without the storms but sure need the rain.

The little bit of rain we got really got the grass growing. It was green , but now it's growing.

Until last night (actually today), I figure I'd gotten about 3.51" of rain for the year. So, yes, I've sure been wishing it would rain. Well, it did. Hail noise woke us at 12:18 a.m. We were getting a downpour, high winds were blowing rain and leaves all the way through a 22" breezeway with 2' eaves on either side, and I thought the hail was going to come through the window here beside the computer. I can see that a large part of one bradford pear tree has broken off and is down in the backyard beside the garden tool storage shed. We're still getting a light rain, so I'll wait for daylight to see how much damage there is.

As the NWS website showed:

?FONT size=3>AT 1218 AM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS DETECTED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING QUARTER SIZE HAIL...AND DESTRUCTIVE WINDS IN EXCESS OF 70 MPH. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR CORINTH...MOVING EAST AT 55 MPH. DESTRUCTIVE WINDS ARE LIKELY GOING TO AFFECT CORINTH AND THE LAKE LEWISVILLE AREA. ANYONE IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM IS URGED TO TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY! ?/FONT>

Yep, that's just when it happened.

I was awakened this morning by thunder and accompanying downpour. Went outside and found water puddles 2 inches deep where roof runoff was running next to the foundation.

Now, 15 minutes later, it's not raining a drop and all excess has soaked in..... this is the first measurable rain this year.... I consider I'm in an extreme drought. I don't yet know how much I got...fast in and fast gone.... probably .3 inches.

Bird, sounds like you got the worst of it, hope damage is not serious when the sun comes up.

We arrived in TX. on Friday. Took until yesterday evening to get rain.
Washed first layer of dust off everything.

Wow, you guys are sure on the opposite side of the spectrum from us here. Seems like it rains every other day here.

Hope you all get caught up soon.

The good news? I've been wanting rain, and according to my gauge, I got about 1.58". And I don't see any serious damage or broken glass.

As I said, we got up about 12:18 a.m. to see and hear the storm, then went back to bed. About 2:35 a.m., the phone rang. It was the city's Code Red Emergency Communications Network calling to tell us a phone line was down so the 911 system was not working. My wife went back to bed, but I just stayed up. However, I finally went back to sleep in my recliner and the phone woke me again at 5:30 a.m.; the Code Red folks calling again to say the 911 system had been restored.

And the bad news? The first 2 pictures show what happened to a Bradford Pear tree, the 3rd one shows how leaves are stuck to the siding (as well as being all over the patio, driveways, yard, and street), and the last one shows the damage to the corner of my garden tool storage building.

But I guess we were very lucky compared to places like Waxahachie and Proper in the area.

Well, we got just under 1 1/4"!

We only had a short spell of pea sized hail early on, along with 40-50mph winds, so I figured I wake up to a little debris. Thankfully from I can tell I only got the good part of these storms, no hail damage on the vehicles and the trees look good.

Allot of heavy damage further S and SE of me, appears a twister or two tore up some homes and businesses.

Bird, looks like overall we where fortunate, I wonder how much Jim got? he lives in line with you and me.

It's that time of year, just late getting started in N Texas.

I must have posted as you where Bird, Your winds where allot worse than ours!! The storms sure intensified as they rolled NE. How's the roof on the house??

Bird,
Hopefully that is the case, ours looks good on my "general 1st observation", but I don't (fingers crossed) expect to find much. Appears you had it worse. Looks like the Pear tree will be able to recover.

How big was your hail? My daughter was pulling into work in SE Weatherford while the Tornado sirens where going off, she called to ask "dad" what to do, (hard on an old guy) I told her to run like He## into the building, afterwords, I caller her she was fine, said the hail was like "quarters". Ours where like Peas size to sleet size.

You have a few "new" chores to look forward to, on that front, we where lucky.

Looks like you guys in the DFW area got all the water. I had plenty of thunder at 4:30 this morning, but my digital rain gauge showed only .16 of an inch of rain. I'll take it. I planted my summer food plot on Saturday, so that's a start. Might rain again on Thursday. Sure would like to see a couple of inches come down. Both my ponds are about 2 feet low and summer is coming on quickly!!!!

Arizona chipping in with my :2cents:
First came a major wind storm, 50 MPH +, took some of the roof off. The temps. had been mostly in the high 80's to the low 100's. High dropped to the 50's. First sideways rain, then calm & sprinkle off and on all day. First rain in several months, measured 3/4" when all done.

I had pretty much quit firing up the wood stove or bring wood in. Used up the last and now this AM frost on the ramp.

Need more rain, less wind and I've had more cold than really wanted.:(

Dennis, I had a Bradford Pear tree in the front yard and when one side broke off, I left the tree to recover. Then the other side broke off. With the current problem, what remains of the current tree problem will either take out the fence or seriously damage the storage building if it falls. And it's too tall for me to take down. So I have a call in for a tree service guy who removed a tree for me 5 years ago. I want the tree completly removed, and would like to have some pruning done on 3 more.

I've got to take a hearing aid in to be repaired this morning, and then the job I guess I'll be working on is cleaning leaves out of the rain gutters. And that will have to be done several times, over several days I'm sure, since the roof is covered with leaves and additional ones will be blowing down into the gutters.

Crash, I heard you get most of your rain in July. But wind that takes part of the roof off is not good. Hope the damage isn't too severe.

Hi,
Don't mean to take this thread.
I will have fix or re roof, waiting for it warm up then go look. But it has started leaking.

We normally get some winter rains, It got damp a couple of times this year. Last summer when the big rains came, it rained on all sides of where my place is. We got 2 or 3 half incher's. Pretty normal to get lots of wind and if it rains, most always sideways. Now just the wind and dust. Re named the rain gauge to dust gauge.

Bird,

I was thinking of your Pear tree on the way to Weatherford. Probably the best thing to do is replace him. They grow so fast anyhow.

Hopefully when you get your roof clear of leaves, all looks well.

Eddie,

I figured you would get a drenching too. I canceled a job last night in Nacogdoches because of the forecast and they didn't get squat and I got poorer.

I'm not even going to replace that tree; just want to be rid of it. I was surprised to see how much the wind today cleared the leaves off the roof, but I sure had a job cleaning gutters.

At least I had a little good luck today, too. I expected a hearing aid to have to go to the factory for a $250-$300 repair, but my Beltone lady in Denton (Shirley Green) seems to have fixed it there in the office at no charge.

My tree service guy still hasn't called, but you should see all the trees and/or limbs down in this neighborhood. I reckon anyone in that business is going to stay very busy the next week or two.

So I went to Home Depot and bought a cheap electric chainsaw; figure that'll be a lot faster than using my Makita reciprocating saw.

Bird, your Bradford pears sure seem to take a beating from storms. At least you didn't lose the whole tree this time.

We got 0.7" of rain out of last night's storm and some blessed cool weather. Yesterday, it was 92 and muggy. Today it is blissfully cool and pleasant if also a little breezy. We had no bad wind or hail, just sweet and welcome rain.

I swear that I'm going to stop listening to the forecasts. I've also canceled jobs because of the impeding storm that is supposed to hit and how bad it's going to be, only to have nothing happen all day. It makes me feel like a sucker that got tooken again.
