Rain and rain guages

Sounds like you need to setup a weather station!

If I ever have the spare cash I'll setup a weather station. I'm really curious how much rain and wind we get. We had a wind gust that came through a few months ago that snapped a Sweet Gum in half about 15-20 feet up the trunk. I'm guessing the tree is 18 inches or more in diameter. I heard the wind but I thought it was rain.

If it wasn't a second house I would, in a NY minute. I'm assumung you need phone or internet access, or both start one. I have neither. I'm happy w/o internet out there and since both my wife and I have cell phones, we gave up the wired phone line to save the cost.

I think rural was a bad choice of words in my last post. Backwards would have been more appropriate.

Here in Arizona we use a ruler. A yardstick in dry years. That is for measuring between the drops.

At home, got an inexpensive gauge able to handle 11" from work. Only been overflowed once (and it wasn't in a hurricane). Not set up to handle wind-blown rain like the type we used in ABQ, but works quite well.

This larger, all-metal model had a ring of metal u-shaped channels strung around the gauge in a circle at the level of the gauge top. It was supposed to deflect the rain into the gauge when the wind was blowing. Still not sure how well it worked, though. Personally, the bigger the collecting mouth, the better in my opinion.
