Rain-X Product Review: Works Great!

I use it all the time on my '60 Impala; the wipers have never worked and they are notoriously weak even when they do.

I have had a string of bad luck and had 4 windshields replaced in the last 2 years in 3 different vehicles.

First thing I do is apply rainX. I think the stuff is awesome and you can feel how much smoother the glass is immediately.

I always thought it was a coating not a cleaner. It is widely used in the aircraft industry also, even on polycarbonate and acrylic windows.

They have a line of glass cleaner out now and it's pretty good too but doesn't compare to the small bottle of treatment.

I use the Rain-X WWF or Prestone WWF with Repel.. Both work pretty good on thier own... but also make an application of Rain-X last longer.

What takes it off?

I used a green paste product specifically for cleaning residue from windshields. Its been about 30 years so I don't recall the name of the product. It might still be hanging around in the bottom of one of my old tool boxes though. I think the RainX must have some silicone in it to repel the water. It seems to be more than just a cleaner because as it wears off and no longer repels the water, the wiper will start dragging and skipping making one heck of a racket too. They don't do that on clean glass without the application of RainX.

As some silicone compounds (as are many other compounds) are not required to be listed in the MSDS, you may be right but as the windshield gets dirty the effects of "clean" disappear also. Is this the RainX "wearing off" or is the windshield just getting dirty? Or changing the surface tension? And how do you know your windshield is clean without the RainX? Contrary to belief, Windex DOES leave a residue as do many soaps. In plating, we use what is called a water break test to make sure the part is free of contamination and fingerprints. A clean part will cause the rinse water to just roll off. A dirty part will cause the water to bead or stick to the part.

So the argument of RainX wearing off is weak. I think the glass is just getting dirty (contaminated).

By the way, I have had that nut fall off also. I found it in the tray underneath the motor and reinstalled it and all was good.

Yeah, that's where I found mine. But when I put it on and tested, the motor would only move the wipers at a very, very slow speed, so I just went ahead and replaced the motor since I was already in there.

Try applying it some time and tell me it's just a cleaner.

That stuff is fantastic. I also use it on my side windows and outside mirrors. I have not found it to be any use in combating fogging on the inside, though.

The biggest problem with it is that you'll find yourself being annoyed at the ridiculously slow drivers around you, and then realize that... oh, right. They can't see where they are going.

You get so used to superior visibility that you forget what it was like B.R. (Before Rain-X).


It can be a bit annoying when it's just drizzling a bit. That's when the wipers are needed, and they do chatter a bit.


But the upsides are well worth it.

Put it on as directed, and use the windshield washer version as well, and it stays for a loooooong time.

If we would EVER get some real rain here I might try the product. I wonder if Rain-X makes a dust repellent product - I should check.

They have a wax for vehicles that works pretty darn good as well.
