Yes. Mercedes G56. Direct takout from those trucks, until the 6.7 rolled around and Chrysler wanted to reduce cruising RPM.
In the EU product finder, i cannot specify a G56 equipped Atego anymore, even the 816 with 7.5 ton GVW and 156hp at 1800rpm lists a G90 six speed.
The Atego ranges from 7.5 to 16 ton gvw with four and six pots from 156 to 299hp

Off course in a pickup truck is a much lighter duty application.

Back in the 80's I remember working on Cadillac 8/6/4 engines. In theory, it made sense as a fuel saver, shut down valves when cruising. In reality, there were many carbon buildup issues.
Back to truck engines...
Yes, you can keep the intake valve closed to reduce the amount of pistons sucking against the throttle valve vacuum at low engine load, yet you have to keep the exhaust valve open too, because otherwise the piston sucks open either the intake or exhaust valve against the valve spring pressure, and still fills up.

Which means manufacturers keep the exhaust valve open to let the deactivated cylinder in- and exhale freely from the exhaust manifold. Because the deactivated cylinder is not operating, its cold so exhaust gas soot can coke in that deactivated piston. Its really a crappy solution.

Maybe in the modern day and age of ported injection, a deactivated cylinder may breathe in the intake manifold because its not drawing a mixture but fresh air, though i dont know if this interferes with other cylinders breathing...

I had a neighbor that bought a new "Chevrolet" half-ton. It came from the factory with all Chevrolet name plate & trim on one side, and alll GMC Seirra name plate & trim on the other side.

The dealer, of course, offered to correct the oversight, but the neighbor declined, opting to keep the as it came. So much for the theory that GMC's were better than the common ole Chevy.

On the other side, I bought a new 1981 Ford Escort Hatchback. It came with all the fancy trim on one side, and zero trim on the other side. Yeah, I did let the dealer correct that oversight. Better judgement - I should have let the dealer keep it! Worse vehicle that I ever wasted money on...

Sorry to deviate from the Dodge/Ram controversary, but I think it does verify that they're one and the same just as Chevy/GMC are.

The hemi keeps both intake AND exhaust valves closed during cylinder deactivation. This allows the trapped air to act as an air spring.

I always found GMC to have nicer trim, just like Olds over Pontiac etc.

Agreed, We bought a '85.5 Escort wagon, junk. We were 33 years before we tried Ford again.

Other than the motor completely falling out, i.e. 'hit the ground falling out', the dash completely broke out, both front seat backs completely broke off, and the timing belt broke at 30K miles, costing me around $1K for replacement. I waited...hmmm, make that never bought another Ford. That didn't stop me from buying a "Door falling off Dodge van. But then, that's another story...

But wasn’t the Escort supposed to be junk? I thought that was its entire branding. “It sucks, but it’s cheap!”

The Escort must be one of the least expensive cars, adjusted for inflation, ever built in the USA.

Massey built a V8 diesel ag tractor some years back and one of the farmers down the road has one. The cylinder banks stick out over the frame on both sides and it's turbo charged as well and he has it turned up a tad. Last year I had to do an in field weld on it, He actually broke the top link forged steel bracket completely in two pieces pulling a huge Swedish tine cultivator.

They sound real sweet with a straight pipe and the turbo really sings when pulling hard. Used to be a Massey dealer close by and still a lot of them working around here actually. He also pulls a large Loftness stubble chopper I've worked on as well. 2 years ago he stubble beat a box spring that someone put in his field and he didn't see it. Was probably loaded anyway. He like to drink and farm which is pretty typical around here. I spent a good part of a day torching out the mangled box spring and then had to order a new drive drive coupling from Loftness to replace the one that got shock overloaded. I asked him if he even felt it getting sucked in and he said the only thing that he felt was the Loftness jump up a bit...lol. Keep in mind that this stubble beater is 13 feet wide and has to be roaded from one end only. Sure did eat the box spring no issue and I bet the Massey blew some smoke too.

I have no idea what it outputs PTO wise but I bet it's well in the excess of 300 PTO. I also bet it sucks down diesel like a drunken sailor as well.
V-8 Perkins if I recall.
