Ramsey Winch & RTV, One more question

I just ordered my RTV on Saturday. It was a Christmas gift from my wife. The (almost) best part was she let me choose which ATV to get. (I know all you guys are now jealous of my boss, but I'm afraid she's unavailable.) Hadn't heard of the RTV until I started looking. Got lots of great info by lurking on TBN. Finally test drove an RTV, and knew the RTV was the one for me. I'm a little concerned about power (our ranch headquarters are at 8500 ft, and we top out around 11000). But, my dealer says they are working on a turbo (prototype already running), so if I feel the need they should be able to help me out.

I was going to get the new Warn 4.0 winch, since 4.0 > 3.0, and bigger is better, right? But then I read the comments here about the benefits of wireless, and that sounds pretty convincing. I'll need the winch a lot for pulling logs to where I can get at them, etc... The Warn 4.0 has a wired remote, but the wireless sounds even better.

I've read the (3?) threads here about installing the Ramsey 3.0 wireless, but I still have a couple of questions.

1. For mounting, do I just need the V4254, "Winch Mounting Kit" (that's the Kubota part #)? My dealer has one ready for me if I want it.

2. What's the "fairlead" that is talked about in some of the posts? Does that come with the V4254?

3. What about rollers, do they come with the winch?

4. Does the winch mount tight and neat similar to the Kubota OEM Warn 2.5? I decided against getting the Kubota/Warn because it's too small, and it costs a lot ($630 installed). I can get the Ramsey 3.0 for a lot less, and since my time is free there's no charge for installation of that one

Second, congrats on getting a RTV.

Third, even more congrats for having the boss buy it for you.

Lastly, the winch and setup...
Which model RTV did you get? If you have the front grill guard, as I recall, you don't need the winch mounting kit. Everything is pre-drilled for mounting a winch.

But... I believe the bolt pattern for the 4.0 is different than the 3.0 and "may" not fit inside the area.

Have you checked out the Ramsey winches? I believe all the Ramsey's either come with or have available the wireless.

Another option to consider is a multi-mount option. Check out www.hunterworks.com. This setup allows the winch to be mounted off the front or rear of the RTV.

The roller fairleads is a pair of horizontal and another pair of vertical rollers that your cable runs through. This provides a smooth rolling surface for the cable to flow into and out of the winch spool.

I got the rec (camo) model. The '05 version has the hydraulic bed lift, so it seemed like the one. I'm partial to orange (love them Husky saws, too), but I'll probably use the RTV for hunting some, and orange isn't the best for that.

From what I've read here, the Ramsey 3.0 w/ wireless seems like the winch of choice. Since I've got the Rec model, with brush guard, I guess the only thing I'll have to get is the fairlead.

I saw this, and it has lots of appeal. The downside is that the winch, when installed, sticks way pretty far out in front (I think?). I've got lots of stream crossings and gully crossings, and I suspect the winch would hit the bank on the way out if it sticks out in front. I could keep the winch detached, but given the lack of storage on the RTV that means I'd end up leaving it in the toolshed, and wouldn't have it if (when!) I get good and stuck.

On the other hand, having a winch on the back is really handy for skidding and dragging logs. Maybe what I need is a pulley on top of the ROPS, so I can run the cable over that to grab logs that are behind me.

I don't recall whether the fairlead comes with the winch but it will say if included when you purchase the winch. If not, a fairlead (get one with rollers) can be purchased most anywhere but I think they go for about $10 on e-bay.

For the multi-mount setup, I thought I recall it was going to be set up on some kind of riser so it'll be several inches above the existing receiver. I don't know if I'd go over the ROPS.

The V4254 Winch Mounting kit includes the fairlead bracket/rollers. It is not included with the winch. The wireless Ramsey 3.0 is the best and it will install with no problems. Dargo & Dozernut have this winch installed on their RTVs (I have seen them work in person). You only need the fairlead bracket out of the Kubota kit for the Ramsey, so just getting it cheap on eBay might be a better way to go. However, I'm not sure of fitment and all with the eBay deal, so getting the Kubota kit is a sure thing.

Yeah, a small normally aspirated diesel engine does not perform as well at high altitudes but I have heard of folks correcting this power loss with a turbo (boost).

Welcome back... Haven't seen you around in awhile.

I can't find the post but as I recall the full V4254 winch mounting kit really isn't needed if you have the front grill guard. The only thing needed out of the kit is the fairlead bracket. I believe there's a part # for that but I can't find it. I'm 99% sure I got mine aftermarket and the mount is universal.

I saved the Ramsey winch thread in in MY Home stuff. This was part of another post

"No mounting kit was necessary on the Worksite model. The winch bolts onto the already existing plate perfectly. The only additional hardware needed is a bracket for the fairlead. You can get just the Fairlead Bracket from Kubota. It is part number K7561-91430. TractorSmart lists this on their site for $31.30. I assume this bracket would work with the Ramsey Fairlead. I built a bracket with materials I already had."

The K7561-91430 DOES work with the Ramsey fairlead, everything bolts right up.

The only hard part is getting my fat short hands down to the winch to release it for freespolling out.

Yeah, the full kit is not needed (especially for the Ramsey winch) but you will need that fairlead roller bracket. All RTVs have that mounting plate already installed...the winch mounting kit instructions used to be misleading, and probably still are, concerning the mounting plate.
