Ranch Entrance

Has anyone ever seen a ranch entrance gate built from cut down telephone poles. Would last a long time. I have some I have been thinking of making an archway with. How do you think that would look? Need some feedback.

Hi,
The T poles on my gate are about 15 years old and still in good shape. The gate is made out of 2" water pipe and 11' 6" wide.

No top or arch, I wanted to bring in long posts & such. They have to be lifted over the gate posts. Top of the gate is a little over 6' and not in the picture, has horse shoes across the top. The anchor post does have guy wires on it, due to the weight of the gate.

Someone with knowledge and a chain saw can complete something like in the below photo in a couple of hours. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of it.

A crew of 10 hard working men, with all supplies needed and equipment could not build that in a "Couple of Hours." Setting the posts and The rock work alone would take a couple of days.

I think if you use telephone poles, it will look (and smell) like telephone poles no matter how much 'lipstick' you put on it. It will be strong and durable, but I would never choose poles for a nice formal entrance. If you are looking for function over style and class, go ahead, but "Ranch Entrance" to me means something more stylish and polished than old (or new) telephone poles.

BTW: You can take poles to a sawmill and get beautiful 6" x 6" square poles cut out of them (some larger poles 8" x 8") that look nice and are a nice constant dimension to work with. They still smell like creosote, but the smell goes away after awhile and they will last a long time. The major thing is that they look nothing like telephone poles.
