What do you farm? obviously not apples.

Why would you compare a six wheel 2 wheel drive 18 hp gator to a 4 wheel drive 40 hp Ranger?

Sorry but if you idea of a gator is the 6x4 you wouldn't know. The 6x4 has very little ground clearence, has a slow top speed (18mph), and come with very crappy tires. They are built strong and can haul one heck of a load. This was their purpose, not riding trails. They do a pretty good job of riding trails for what they are but still nothing compared to an HPX. It also doesn't help that only the back four tires are driven instead of the front ones as well. How would I know all this you ask ? I used to own one.

Hi Evan: We like stories. Lay um on us. The other posters were correct, it is unfair to compare old style Gator 6X4 to a Ranger. A better comparison would be a Gator 6X4 vs a Polaris 6X6 because they are marketed to the same end users. But still the 6X6 Ranger completely blows away the Gator 6X4. You mentioned the Gator 6X4 getting stuck on a 6" log so I thought that you might enjoy these pictures:

No one really knows how a XUV will compare to a Ranger XP because the XUV is so new. All we can do right now is guess and compare the specs. If some one knows of a comparison please post the link.

As I said in an earlier post: The Ranger has more HP, faster top speed, larger payload, more towing capacity, more suspension travel, higher amp alternator, more seating capacity and the engine is made in the USA. Here is another fact that I gleaned from the spec sheets. (Ranger XP specs) (Gator XUV 620i 4x4) The Ranger is geared lower in low range. Couple the lower low gear and the 40 Hp engine and you get a tremendous pulling advantage for the Ranger. My Ranger goes about 9 mph in low range with the engine at about 4800 rpm. The XUV spec sheet states 17 mph in low range. If some one knows what the max rpm of the XUV engine is please post it.

I looked at the XUV in the show room again today and one thing that the XUV has over the Ranger is the the XUV comes with a ROPS certified Roll Cage. The Polaris Roll Cage is not certified. I had to pay extra for a ROPS cab.
Good Luck, Marshall

Agreed, Polaris really missed the boat when they didn't put a certified ROPS on the Ranger. If the Ranger had ROPS and a metal bed, it would have the total package, for me anyways. Did your dealer get the ROPS from Polaris and install it or was it an aftermarket ROPS?

I drove a XUV today, very nice suspension compared to the HPX. Time will tell how it does, but it appears to be much improved. If you could get a bench seat it might be in the running for my next Utility.

Hi Viking: The ROPS cab is made by Curtis but is only available through a Polaris Dealer. The ROPS cab completely replaces the factory roll cage and makes for a more compact package compared to adding cab parts the the factory roll cage. The basic Rops cab came with a steel top and a polycarbonate windshield and you can upgrade to canvas or steel doors, a glass windshield with one or two wipers and a Polycarbonate rear window. I went for the whole ball of wax and got the glass windshield with two wipers, steel doors, rear window, heater and CD player/Radio.
This is my Ranger with the ROPS cab

I don't see what is so great about a steel bed. Steel beds get scratched-up, dented and they rust. My plastic bed seem pretty tough, I guess that you could crack it if you stood back about 20 feet and threw big rocks at it but the same treatment would really bang up a steel bed. Polaris has been selling the plastic bed for quite a while now has anyone ever heard of one breaking? I know I have seen several JD beds that were badly rusted.

If you go John Deere, get the bed liner. They are very tough and durable and really protect the bed.

If you want to line a metal bed either a truck or a UTV I suggest having a spray in bed liner put in. I have a spayed in Rhino Liner in my F-350 and it is great. When I lived in the north we had a lot of rust problems with insert liners in pick-up trucks. The liners would trap grit rub paint away and trapped moisture rusted out the beds.

i keep up on the touch up paint plus i put a cheap pray on bed liner in my bed too. and it helped out alot on the cratches . but yea i drop lots of rocks plus i backed into a few trees i think if i would have done that with a plastic bed i would have been buying a new one .now i think a aluminum bed would be alot better but maybe one day they will come around and make one.i even thought about taking the bed off my hpx and making a aluminum flat bed with removable side rails it would be just as tough but half the wieght.

Here is a testament to the ruggedness of the Ranger and it's plastic bed. No one was hurt. The Ranger in this video survived with only a racked roll cage. The fenders and the bed did not show any damage.
Ranger rolls down hill.
The plastic bed can take more twisting and bending than a steel bed and still spring back to it's original shape.
Good Luck, Marshall
