I'm purchasing a tractor from a dealer that carries Rankin brand Implements. I'd like to buy a 72" medium duty box blade with the tractor but, I've never heard of Rankin before, so I was hoping to get some feedback from some of you that have experience with this line of implements before I spend my hard earned money. I don't have a model number yet, I'm calling the dealer tomorrow for more info. He wants $799.00 for a 72" medium duty box blade, I think he said it weighed about 1000lbs but he didn't have any in stock for me to look at. Does Rankin have a web site? What brands , models would you reccomend for a 6ft wide 30hp tractor to pull? Thanks for any help you can provide. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hi,

What 30 hp tractor do you plan on using to move a 1000 lb. Six foot wide boxblade...? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

You're talking a serious implement here... that requires some even more serious grunt torque and bulk weight to properly move this baby in a continuous working manner... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(especially, when you drop all 8 of those scarifiers down into the ground engaging mode...)/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks for the Rankin link, I see the box blade I want is ONLY 860lbs /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Do you think this is too much for a Kubota 3130? I've read many posts here of guys piling extra weight onto their box blades just to get them to cut. I figured I'd solve that problem by getting a nice heavy blade to begin with. This will be my first tractor, so I'm open to any wisdom you can send my way.

Rankin 2G2-72T, 72” Scraper w/7 Shanks, Floating Tailboard, 860 lbs.

4G2 SERIES , Cat. 1 or 2 , 3-point hitch , For tractors 50 to 70 HP, 2 or 4 WD

That's a super looking HD boxblade... but it may be a tad too much pulling it with a Kubota 3130 considering the mfr. recommends (don't forget their fudge factor also) a minimum of 50 hp and that may be DBHP...?! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

What kind of work are you planning on doing with this boxblade?

I think the 2G2 series is rated for 30-60 hp. I know I'll be on the light end of that range. I plan on using it to reclaim my rocky stoney mud pit of a driveway, and to knock down all of the ancient mole hills in my pasture, some are nearly 2ft high and may have been there for years and years. They are quite substantial and I think I will tear the heck out of my rotary cutter if I don't knock them down first. What does a floating tailboard do?

Oooppss... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

See what one tiny weeny number can do to change the equation... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Too bad you couldn't borrow a unit from the dealer for a few hours and test it... nothing like first hand knowledge... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(and I realize, he doesn't have any in-stock /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif)

The only thing that scared me is it doesnt connect to the back of the boxblade but they looks well built.

The floating or hinged tail board has two different functions while using the box blade. When grading in the right soil condition the floating tail works somewhat like a drag and helps smooth loose dirt. It also allows the front cutting blade to dig deeper with out a fixed rear blade to restrict it.

It is worth note that there are varies opinions about the floating rear blade. Many on the site like to extend their top link so that the front cutting edge is not hitting the ground and the rear fixed blade is used for final smoothing. This will not work with the hinged rear blade. Some box blade models allow you to lock the rear blade and I think that would offer the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the info on the hinged tail board. I'm not sure I want one yet. I'll search the forum when I have more time and learn some more before I make a decision. Great site we have here!
