Raspberries Galore!

Yep, Jim, I've used sticks and such, but found the leather glove worked best for me. The thorns are bad enough, but the occasional snake and wasp nest is even worse.

And Egon, if I ever saw a salmon berry, I didn't know what it was. Although I have caught a few salmon.:)

Oh Bird, the memories. I can't tell you how many hornet nests I've kicked over while picking berries. Ever see someone sprint right thru the briars? That's me!

The only berries we have ready here in NEPA is cackleberries.

Raspberry patch in the backyard is busy filling out, very few blooms yet. Blackberries in the front patch are busy ripening :)
But the rhubarb and strawberry patches are both churning out goodies already!

Yep, I'm still rather fond of the cackleberries for breakfast.;)

We only have a few plants but they've spread each year and we've had a bumper crop already this year. Wild blackberries are also starting to ripen as well along with a few wineberries- not as many as previous years but they are really good!

The thornless blackberries that my grandpa and father inlaw have are huge, like the size of your thumb. It's really impressive, until you eat one. They don't compare to wild berries. Not nearly as as flavorful or sweet. They are great for pies, jams, or jellies, but not so good to just pop in your mouth.

I mowed my walking paths up in my field and woods yesterday, taking special care to mow paths right to all the good berry patches. They are loaded with berries, but still a week or two away from ripe.

My plan is to my our trails near the Blackberries this week. I think they are past their full "bloom" and the deer and birds are gettings lots of them but I'm hoping we can get a bucket or so. Figured I would take my LONG pruners with me. Pick the berries and then cut the cane to get to the next batch.

I'll spray my long pants with DEET to keep off the chiggers.

Chiggers/Redbugs are this wee little evil creature. They hatch from a mass of eggs and if you hit the mass you will have hundreds of the evil devil spawn on you. They look like small bits of pepper. Easy to miss. They usually climb up, find your waist and dig into warm, dark, wet areas confined by clothing. They like ankles with tight socks as well.

The bite from the Red Bug leaves a little red spot about 24 hours after the attack. Then the itching starts. Itching like you have never had. I'm kinda immune to the itching at this point since I have fed so many of the devil's spawn. I have found that the best thing to do with the bites is to just itch until you scrape off your skin and ooze white fluid. Not real nice and open to infection but it helps stop the itch.

Back to warm, dark, damp areas. This is usually around your waist but it could be lower. Say around your groinage. You really don't want hundres of chigger bites in your groinage. A guy I work with went to a picnic once and sat on a blanket. Red Bugs bit a certain sensitive area.... By the hundreds... The scratch method I mentioned is of limited use when the attack is in this area....:eek::eek::mad:

Later,
Dan

:D There's an entire tree line 10-20 ft. wide full of 'em, and I don't even have to wade in very far. Do have to put long pants back on, though! God's bounty, going right into my bucket!

Good Evening Joe,
The good Lord did provide here also ! :) We dont have them ready yet but they are on their way !!!

I picked about 5 pounds of wild black raspberries this evening. I had picked a quart zip lock back Saturday, but the skeeters were too bad to continue. We had a nice breeze this evening keeping the bugs away, so I waded into the stickers and picked until my arms blead. :p
