Rat\'s Nest on My Motor - Post #3

I am proud to announce the demise of the Rufus Rat family. On this date they have all gone to the big rat's nest in the sky. I went to the farm today and the poison had not been touched. I surmise they gorged themselves on the poison that I put out two weeks ago and crossed the bar to the Rat Heaven. By the way, I used TOM CAT poison from Tractor Supply. That stuff is awesome.

Got mice in the same way. Trap got one and the decon is gone. Still think I need to continue with the proactive approach.
Got the hunting camper out the other day and I'm going through that now also. Learn the hard way I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Rat\'s Nest on My Motor - Post #3

I have grey squrriels in my barn. They have chewed wires and shorted out a breaker. I found and fixed it but they will not cooperate in the have-a-heart traps that I have set.
They do respond well to my 22 rifle but I am not home much to spend time hunting in my barn.
Any secrets for these rats with bushy tails?

I always worry when using poison this way what animal may eat the dead or dying rat. Neighbor's dog (my own dog!), local hawk, local owl . . . Some of the poisons don't degrade very fast. I wish there was another way, but I don't know what it is.

Put a nice big tom cat out there. Your squirrels will either die or run away real quick. I would also try some poisoned nuts on them. I just got rid of a nice 6 member rat family that moved into or should I say under our chicken coop. They liked the chicken food so much they moved right in. We never had rats in the 33 years that I have been around here. This year the town of Rutland condemned two houses about 3 miles from me that were rat infested. I wonder if these scummy little creatures came from there. I used rat poisin on them and got 6 full grown rats in a week. I haven't had any bites on them since. The poisin that I use comes in individual bags. You just throw it on the ground and wait.

Cliff, I have the same feelings about other animals eating the dead rats. My farm is very isolated with the nearest humans about two miles either direction. On my farm I have deer, turkey, bobcat, coyote, coon, possum, you name it. If there was another way to eliminate the rats I would try it.

I use the rat size snap trap. Had red squirrels and chipmunks in my barn and in the basement of the house - that time of year. The 1-2 that got into the poison and croaked inside stunk up the joint for a week; the other critters avoided poison after that. They also stayed clear of the 'have-a-heart' traps, but a good ol' snap trap with peanut butter and POW - they were all suffering from severe neck pain within a few days.

I have found that I need to use a new trap each time; they avoid used ones once the smell of death is on them. Oh yeah, set them out of the reach of kids - and by all means remember where you put them (the traps, not the kids)! Nothing like stumbling across one next spring, the finger you lose could be your own.

Happy hunting. -Norm

Norm, thanks for that info. I'm covered up with the tree rats. Last year they chewed the wiring under the hood on my pickup.
