Once you get the snakes out, maybe you can spray foam the hole. The foam would be easy to remove if you need to fork the container.

Not bashing you in any way, so please don't take it that way, but I think it needs to be said for those reading this.

Although the trick below works, it is illegal and when done to a gopher tortoise hole, it is against the federal endangered species act. It will get the snake out of the hole, but it also kills the endangered turtle inside.

:)

In Florida, our eastern diamond backs den in gopher holes (Gopher Tortise). The trick to getting the snake out is pouring a little gas down a tube in the back of the gopher hole. The snake comes right out. I don't know if it would be a good idea in this case but if you knew aproximately where he was and could coral him where he only had one exit, gas will do the trick if you are willing to take the gamble with a volitile liquid.
Youre going to have to block it off anyway to prevent this from happening again, just leave an exit and depending on how big your storage container is a cup or 2 of beach or gas poured through a small hole in the floor might do it. When you see him leave, shut the door.

It's really too bad that the channels aren't solid tubes. I was going to suggest that you put together one of these (using the channels as the barrel) to shoot the snake(s) into the next county:
How it Works: The Artillery-Grade 600 MPH Pumpkin Cannon | Popular Science

Then foam up the channel ends (as buckeyefarmer suggested).

That looks like a lot of fun.

Just an update. We have had a bit of a relative cold snap here --lows all the way to a chilly 69 overnight.

No sign of "Soon to be", which can either mean he has moved on or is holed up.

My father in law/neighbor used this as an excuse to get a Snaker Charmer Shotgun.

Snaker Charmer Shotgun

ustmd, sounds like fun to me, if you wasn't so far away, I'd like to see if this old Floridiot still had what it takes. If you get a clean head shot of him, skin and filet him, they are pretty tasty deep fried.

Now "Soon to be" is just teasing me. I have been randomly checking the area. Just found this--it wasn;t there 2 hours ago

Most likely holed up and soon will be waiting it out until Spring.
Mothballs are SO CHEAP and you get SO MANY of them that a handful into every known inlet/outlet and another handful under every unused vehicle, camper, trailer a few more around every shed, barn and outbuilding would be very little money very well spent.

Shooting 'em may not be as much fun as you imagine, chances of having the weapon ready, loaded and at hand are slim for the few seconds of each sighting.
Even if you DO finally get one with a gun you are then faced with disposal and if it is a nest you'll never know if there is a breeding pair still left.

IOW, just chase 'em out with the marvel of modern chemistry (-:

You can also spread sulpher powder (get at local feed store) to keep them away. Also works on other pests too. Also you need to get rid of their food source (mice, rats etc.). On our place we've worked very hard to keep the mice away and we haven't spotted any snake of any kind in the last few years. Originally we had snake spottings on a weekly basis.

Good luck.

We are going to be working on the repellant side pretty hard.

We are actually the opposite witht eh snake population. We move out here ion 2001. The people we bought the property from were have snake encounters every week. We worked very hard on eliminating habitant for snakes and there food--mowing,etc. Didn't have any significant encounters until this year. First year we have had good rains in a few years. Also, the neighbor is starting to work his 500 ac for hay and I think that is driving it everyone out.

Just don't let that sucker bite you. My brother got bit about a month ago by a Copperhead just above the nail of his finger and the Hospital bill at this point stands at $70,000. His insurance is only going to pay $6,000 of that. It only took 4 vials of antivenom @ $10,000 each and the rest is the doctor and overnight stay. He called his liability insurance carrier on the farm and they said they would cover anyone but him since he痴 the policy holder (they are afraid of lawsuits). I'm checking my health insurance policy to verify coverage of this type and looking into insurance at the farm. Rattle snake bites are much worse than a copperhead. $70,000 seems outrageous to me!
