Late to the thread, but I have a question for all those who want to force Wally to unionize.
Do you know of anyone who was ever forced to work at a Wal-Mart?
Low wages or not, the last I looked every last employee there volunteered for the job. If 80% don't last a year, so what? The purpose of a business is not to provide a job for their employees, it is to make a profit for the owners. And if the business fails at that job, it will close -- which means no jobs for anyone.
I have a news flash. In Josephine county Oregon the unemployment rate is now 16%. All those underpaid workers at Wal-Mart feel pretty lucky to have a job at all, even if the pay sucks. It is still higher than unemployment.
And, I have yet to see Wal-Mart force anyone to walk that mile from the back of the parking lot to the store entrance. People do it willingly. Just because you don't want to, you don't have to, you can go to a different store.
But, what I suspect is that the people who complain about Wal-Mart, want the low prices, they just don't want the long walk to the store, and the checkout lines. Well, they all go together. The prices are low because the labor cost is low. If you want lots of service, go somewhere else.
But, for me, since I am retired, I have the time to spend to save a few bucks.
