RCK60-24B bearing failure ??

( I'm still just dumbfounded that he said to NEVER fill the bearings with grease.... Just tease them a little bit,.. it makes them work for it! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )

I expect there is the chance of damaging the seal from the pressure within. As for too much grease in a mower blade spindle housing, probably not an issue as the grease can escape via the seal. Although in a situation where the grease cannot get out easily - too much grease can cause overheating in a high speed application.

well, I feel I am at the end of the grease delimia.....
went to the shop and raised the deck on the Bx2230, I located the holes on the cups under the deck it was very easy to see them with the deck raised all the way using a flashlight.
I had already put about 70 shots in the bearings yesterday.
I started pumping, I didn't really count them but after about 20 to 30 pumps on each....HERE COMES THE GREASE.....
I was very happy until I noticed a little leak coming from the power steering sector seal. Now something new to worry about, My thanks to all the people who posted. This is a great site...

Man,... you filled the cup with grease???....
That means you filled the whole bearing with grease until it spooged, and then you dumped (what I guess would take) another 40 - 50 shots of grease in to those cups. Now those cups will spooge that out as they rotate and it will be all over the bottom of your deck. That will make even more grass stick.

Take the deck off. Get it on end. Pull the blades and cups, and clean out the cups. Trust me, you'll be surprised how easy it is.

Heck, that thiing will paint your yard with that grease. The cups are to catch the excess, but that is pushing it.

Your right, I do have a small amount of grease on the inner deck (after checking) but I also have the comfort of knowing both bearings top and bottom have now been greased. I would much rather deal with extra grease than premature bearing failure,,,,

No doubt you have greased your bearings. Take deck off, remove the blades and cups and clean them out. You will be glad you did.

Enjoy that Bota! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You obviously have not had those cups off before. There is probably room for 3 or so measuring cups of spooge in there. None of it is lubricating anything. If you want to leave it there and let it make a mess, so be it.

If you want to learn to maintain your tractor properly, then you will need to learn to pull the blades. Now is a great time to do it, and when you do you can pull the cups.

Myself,

I doubt I would take the blades off just for the sake of emptying the extra grease from the spindle covers...

But I think I will make it a practice to look under the covers, and clean the excess grease out, each time I take the blades off to sharpen or replace them.

At least as long as the grease film on the lawn doesn't make it too slippery... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hi r0GuE, well the truth is I could take the entire tractor apart and put it back together again, but there's this thing I have become fond of since I am approaching my 50th birthday it's called "the easy way out" now, now, I know I will probably get alot of comments on this one, but it is a personal choice and I don't expect others to take the same approach...I do respect your opinion.

thanks,

How do you get the cups off without removing the blades?
