Hi All.

I have a B3000 with a RCK60-30BA belly mower.

I started cutting grass today and noticed I had a large "Streak" on the left side. I stopped and took a look and saw smoke coming out of the bottom of the mower on that left side.

I raised the mower deck up and found that the blade and spindle area were blazing hot.

I let it cool down some and took a closer look and noted that the blade was loose and wobbly. Seems like the bearing(s) may be burnt up.

I tried to tighten it up and it just would not tighten.

I have no idea at this point what to do next.... other than call the dealer to come and pick up the mower deck for repair.

Before I do that, does anyone have any suggestion what I should try next? I figured I would have to drop the mower deck off in any event, so if there is a repair that I can do to save some money, I'm all for it.

I don't know how hard it is to replace the spindle and parts.

Thanks !

I can not be much help with your "What should I try next",

But

I have the three spindle assemblies from an unidentified Kubots mowing deck that came with my B7200 (old ;-)

The deck was rusted beyond repair and is long gone.. but, I saved the spindles because they still turned smoothly.

If you get to the point that you are replacing spindles yourself, a few basic dimensions would determine if the spindles I have can be useful to you.

Let this post be a place marker for your efforts.

On your topic, If there was smoke, there are failed bearings, and things will need to be removed and disassembled to evaluate the scope of damage.

Everything can be fixed or replaced, it's only a matter of time and money.

If it were me, I would have the "hot" spindle off the deck and on my bench ASAP/ Spindle assemblies can be purchased on ebay etc.

Thanks for that info CalG. I may try my luck at dropping the deck and getting the spindle off to measure.

I appreciate the offer of tho spindle.... if it fits.

Shouldn't be all that complicated. (except maybe for putting the deck back under there by yourself) Once the deck is out stand and prop it up so you can work both sides. Remove the blade from one end, the pulley from the other end, and the spindle assembly is held on by four bolts. The bolt heads will be all rounded off so they will be rather uncooperative. A 3/8 impact and six point socket should work.

Not too tough, run the tractor up some good ramps, pull the belt, pull the blade, then there should be 3-5 bolts that keep the spindle on. Forgot the safety shield, that comes off too. When the spindle is out, 9 times out of ten the bearing spun and the spindle housing is shot too. In my experience, most mower decks are made by AYP. $60 for quality bearings + time, labor, and shipping. Or $85 + shipping to replace with a completely new unit. I wouldn't even remove the deck from the tractor unless I absolutely had to. most cases there isn't a need to.
