Re-building tractor - what model is "easy" for beginner?

It could possibly be due to a company acquiring, or copying off patent rights to build a like type M-F, 35.

Back in '88 we went to the Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, KY. We saw what we thought, if I remember correctly, a pristine restored M-F, TO-35. It was actually a brand new tractor. A South American company was building them, off the TO-35 patent, which had expired. At the time, that's how far behind they were in farm machinery technology. I guess it was easier to build off of someone else's old technology from the mid, to late 50's, than to design their own.

Hi,

I what to try re-building an old tractor as a hobby (i already own a Ford 4600 for work on the fatm and do minimal maintenance). I am looking for a 35 hp approx. old tractor, available in Canada, that I could "play" with during winter in my garage, but I want an "easy" one to start with since i am not a mechanician myself.

What model would you suggest for a beginner? I will then try to find a well beated, low cost, unit to start with.

There are a lot of Massey Fergusons in Canada. I'd look for a gas engine MF135. Non-running the cost might be $1500. Running maybe $1800. If the engine needs to be rebuilt, figure $1500 for that job parts and labor.

I clicked on the link and there was what looked like a MF 35 with ROPS. Then, I clicked on the link to find a dealer and my nearest one was in Cornwall, England. I wonder how many engine parts are interchangeable with the MF 35 of old?

Don't do it unless when and if you fall in love with a piticular model,that's the one you will stick with until it's finished.

Probaly a licenced Perkins AD3-152, the last MF built in the west had a A3-152. Both engines have full parts support

Apparently it's true; the MF 35 lives again! AGCO is producing them for Africa. They sure could have done worse. A wonderful machine. Built to never need maintenance, but easy for the owner to maintain when they did.
