RE: leaking 4100.....

Well I came home from a weekend away to see a small puddle under my 2001 JD 4100. I crawled underneath and as best I can tell, it appears to be coming from the transmission seal right near the mid-PTO. It is not a lot fluid, but enough that it is not "normal". I called the JD dealer and they are coming to take a look today. Wish me luck, as I am out of warranty /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The dealer has confirmed I have a leakey gasket by the mid-PTO. I will deliver the tractor tonight to be worked on (the leak is small enough that there is plenty of fluid in the resevoir / system)

Well, I heard from the JD dealer yesterday after they struggled to get my tractor to leak again. They were persistent and discovered the leak was coming from a solenoid valve on the 3-pt hitch /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif The oil was running down the transmission housing. The parts total around 3 bucks and the labor is minimal. WOHOO ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The good news is that this was not my transmission seal, so the tractor did not need to be split in two. They even told me they would deliver it to my house for free to "help me out". Pretty good service, considering the machine is out of waranty.

Guys, I am having a new problem the dealer noticed.....the tractor is home, but my oil pan plug is leaking. I tightened it up a tad more (it can't go any tighter), but still there is a slight leak when the tractor runs. Curiously, I just changed the oil a couple of engine hours ago. I have ordered a new oil pan plug and washer online through JDParts for 3 bucks, but I am hoping my TBN brethren can shed some light / advice on this. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Anybody have this happen ?

I think I may have answered my own question....I dug deep into the archives of TBN and found some peaches /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
It looks like the metal / copper gasket on the oil pan plugs needs to be replaced on occasion to resolve leaks. I should not over-tighten the drain plug (only 1 or 2 more tightenings after initial contact) and if worse comes to worse use teflon paste. Have I told you lately that this is the my favorite website ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, I went and bought a few of the replacment oil plug washers and pulled the plug quickly, swapped out the washer on the plug, installed it and put the oil back in the engine and so far no leaks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif This has been a buzy couple of weeks with this tractor, but I think at last I am back in the saddle.
