Grow something????
Oh yeah, how about flowers and cows, they both seem to flourish out here with little maintenance.

I am so spoiled with DSL the satellite is a step back-wards. But it is faster than Dial-up - most of the time- and since I do not have a phone line The wildblue satellite, $49 a month, $299 equipment fee, and $79 installation fit the ticket. I could buy a faster speed for $69 a month or faster for $79 a month but this is fine.

Mike it usually takes about 2-4 seconds for a page to pop up. Sometimes it takes 45 seconds. I am still trying to figure out why the big difference. I think it might have to do with the different times I'm on the net. Mornings are faster, evenings slower. Mike, it is too cold to fence. are you back home yet?

Eddie, I am going to have many building projects for many years, that is part of the retirement equation.

Kyle, I guess you are my closest TBN neighbor!

All, Living in 2 - 16'X16' rooms is temporary. I told the wife in two years I should have something bigger built. She is very patient and supportive.

Belated congratulations on your retirement. Hope everything works out like you plan. Country living has it's joys and regrets although the regrets are few.

I hope our recent rains mean the end of burn bans since I have a lot of brush stacked to burn. It's to the point that I have stopped clearing, the piles are getting too big. How did you make out on rain in the last two weeks?

I think here in Lee county, they are going to wait until things green up a bit. Big fine if caught burning now$$$.

Don, are you two hanging out in Lagrange?

Kyle, we are "hanging out" on the hill. We just can't find that perfect retirement home in La Grange. Building on the hill in Lee County is becoming our preferred option. Bastrop is the closest for the Super Walmart, Super HEB, Home Depot, Tractor Supply etc... I just got to remember to take a flashlight when I leave the house at 4:00p.m., the hill is very dark by the time I get back. I'm starting to get use to everything taking a half day instead of an hour like it did in Houston. Had another nice "country surprise" today: car insurance reduced $400 a year, it kind of offsets the $250 increase of the internet per year. I am seeing no decrease in gasoline usage, even though the 250 mile round trip to Houston every weekend is now history. The little 50 mile trips are adding up quickly. However, I sure like the sort trips compared to sitting in the vehicle for 2 and 1/2 hours at a time.

Don't worry, you will soon learn to better combine your trips. We are only 15-25 miles from good shopping but we still stack up our trips. We got in the habit of that when I first started to work for NASA. We lived in Dickinson but had to go into Houston for serious shopping.

Ah, the joys of living in the country. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My parents home was 12 miles from the nearest store or gas station. It was a 24 mile round trip to get a gallon of milk. You adjust.

I spent a few years in Bismark, N D. When a native (?) Bismarker (?) said "right over there", it might mean 200 miles. It's all relative.

Some people would see it as an inconvenience being 25 miles from "civilization". Some of us see it as our goal in life.

Yes, it is all relative, however with the price of gas this last year, rather than drive out to the farm each day and back in with the produce, we started to stay out in the shed. Save 22 miles per day.

What did you do in "Bismarck" and how long ago?

Getting used to total darkness when the moon is not full is one of those things that takes awhile. I never wanted to light up the night, but I also know there are critters I don't want to come across without seeing them first. Now that I have a telescope, I love the dark sky. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Jim

We have one of those yard lights you rent from the power company. It is wired into the high side, 7200 volts, so I don't know if it can be switched although I plan to ask. There are times that I want to enjoy the night sky too.
