2007 GMC 3500 crew cab long bed 4wd auto (6 speed) 15.5 mpg empty highway 68 mph towing 15-17k 4h lq horse trailer 9mpg 12-currently 40k miles and counting

3) GMC drw 3500 dmax pulls the load good, with some dowwnshifting on inclines.. rides the best unloaded but is very bouncy with the trailer i may add airbags this summer to stiffen it while loaded.

I've never had a dually, but I would assume that's why you're not getting more than 15.5 empty on the highway.

Also, to be fair, your Duramax has much more horsepower than the two older Fords, which comes with the cost of poorer mileage.

As far as Diesel Pickups go Gearing is everything for Mileage. I have drove 2 identical dodge 2500 quad cabs(01 6 speed H O motor). One with 355 gears gets 22.5 mpg. Truck with 411 gets 17 mpg. FOR my money and mpg I would never buy anything newer than an 07 pre emissions motor.

There is not a signifigant difference in hp or torque.. and I tried different chips and programmer in the fords simply to increase mpg which increased hp.

my perfect truck 2000 7.3 psd engine, 03 f350 loaded ride, 07 GMC transmission and unloaded ride... lol

The Duramax's come with 3.73 gears. Unless they recently added another option 3.73 was the only gear ratio available.

I had a 05 and with my around town driving of 20 mile trips I got 15 mpg. My neighbor has a 07 and his average trip is 5 miles and it suffers getting about 13 mpg. Both 4x4 SRW 3500 series but both would do about 19 mpg on long highway trips. I pulled a 16,000# boat and he pulls a 14,000# 5th wheel. We both get/got 11 mpg. Boat cuts the air much better.

My current Ford SRW 4x4 F350 averages 17 around town, gets as good as 23.6 mpg on the highway, and about 16 mpg pulling the same boat.

As for the tranny the Allison was top notch but the new 7 gear 6 speed Torque Shift from Ford gas been getting the nodd from diesel magazines for the last year or two in this class of trucks.

All my trucks, Ford and GMC have been 3.73 gears.

2008 CCSB K2500 Dmax. DIC shows around 15mpg, I have never reset it. I see 12 when towing. 15-17 on rural road tanks. High 18-20 mpg empty freeway if kept around 70.

Everything was pretty accurate here until this post. 16mpg pulling a 16k boat, yeah right.

A neighbor just got a 2012 2500HD Sierra CCSB 4x4 Duramax with a topper. The computer says he is averaging 14 mpg and he is really getting 13.1 mpg hand calculated. He has 4000 miles on the truck and hasn't towed anything yet. 60/40 highway/city miles. He also told me that the truck uses about 1 gallon of urea every 1000 miles.
He is hoping his mileage will improve after 10,000 miles. His 06 LBZ Duramax got 16-19 mpg until he traded it in on his current truck.

Believe what you want. I pull about 10,000 miles per year. If I hook upto a 7,000# camper I would be lucky to get 13mpg. Its all in the aerodynamics, not the weight so much. I did a trip with this rig from my house in Daleville Indiana to Jamestown Kentucky and back to town after dropping the boat on 17 gallons of fuel. 285 miles each way. Do the trip 4 to 5 times a year. Google the trip using the maps page. I took IN35 to IN1 to I74 to OH275 to I75 to the Cumberland Parkway toll road to the Jamestown Kentucky exit. My buddy followed me in a 2012 F-250 pulling a nearly identical SeaRay, mine is a Wellcraft, also on a tri-axle trailer and did just at 15mpg.

Heck, my 07 Titan gets 9.1mpg pulling my small boat, 9,700# on a tandem axle trailer.
