GregJ,
Very well said. I use my backhoe to do landscaping around the house, mostly transplanting shrubs. Our ground is so hard and rock laden, that to dig a small hole by hand requires a shovel, pick ax, strong back and lots of time. Very frustrating. Plus, try swinging the pick ax in close proximity to your house...very difficult. If you look at most of the homes in our neighborhood, they don't even bother to try to plant or pull out anything until its way overgrown and unsightly, then they have to hire someone and pay some pretty big bucks.
For me, I now enjoy the work using the backhoe...it's actually fun and relaxing and a diversion from "regular life".
I agree that sizing the tractor to the jobs you have intended is a better judge than the actually size of your property. Do we need these tractors? No. But if we can afford them and they help us enjoy life more, especially with our families, then I recommend getting whatever is within your "reasoning".
