Shareholders own a corporation. Me and Warren Buffet could own one of the "foreign" auto companies tomorrow. All we have to do if become majority stock holders. Since my buddy Warren and I are Americans, would that then make Subaru or Honda an American company? Let us know which one you'd like us to buy and I'll text WB this afternoon.

If some Italian outfit gathered up enough money and bought, oh, say Chrysler, would that make Chrysler an Italian company? Just askin'.

So, if a Saudi prince bought up GM stock and became the major stock holder, would that make it a Saudi company?

Good thing we have good old GE, a red, white and blue American company. I always buy GE to "keep the profits here". Oh wait, they don't pay their corporate taxes here, OK, bad example.

Satirically yours,

Have a great day, guys.

Not to worry, according to Fama (Fama, 1980), a shareholder only owns the stock and not the corporation.

Yea but own 51 % of the stock and you could force out the CEO and replace the board and you would be in charge

I fail to see how buying a foreign owned brand that benefits Japan profit wise, is somehow better for the country than buying a brand that was bailed out with taxpayer money. It's like shooting your foot because your pissed off that you stubbed your toe.
Government ownership was down to about 25% after the November 2010 stock sale, not sure if more has been sold yet. But soon the company will be free of government ownership. This was not the way I would like to see things done, but like Harley Davidson and many others, it was overall better to save the jobs than hope they somehow got spread to other U.S, companies.
And you'll find that they sold the stock at a substantial loss. And you'll also find that since the corporation is taxpayer owned, that the taxpayer.............this means you if you have a job................get to pay twice to keep them afloat.

Not really taking sides and not speaking of anyone in this post, but ....

I would be willing to bet that a LOT of nay sayers about the GM / Government bailout would sound differently if GM had just went bankrupt and dissolved totally.

Probably a majority of those nay sayers would be saying stuff like:
"Why didn't our Government step in and protect U.S. jobs?"

"Look at those darn foreign imports / rice burners / "other brands" that forced GM out of existence!"

"Why didn't blah blah blah "

Just like trying to get every voter in the U.S. to vote for 1 person, ......it will never happen.

People are funny.

Some people like to stir pots.

Some people just cannot process events / actions.

and some people are wishy washy. They say what they think you want to hear.

And some people will agree with another because they cannot or will not find / know the facts and their friend "sounds" like they know what they are talking about

and maybe in this case, just because the Government did act, people are upset because it was "the Government" who in their eyes never does anything right (or the way they want it).

You cannot please everyone all the time
If you knew 'half' of what I know about GM.......and taxpayer bailouts...........

You would be on their doorstep with a pitchfork, running them out of town.

And I want to 'emphasize' TAXPAYER.

Thats a term that is left out of most every discussion.

The government has no money, other than what they forcibly take from the working people of this country.

It ain't Gubment money.............it's our money/the working peoples money.

And until gubment taught, brain dead individuals realize that fact..........we as a country are screwed.

And if you decide to start a factory building widgets, and the market for said widget will pay you 3 bucks, but you decide said widget is gonna sell for 6 bucks due to your labor costs, then you are goin down. Taxpayer shouldn't pay for that.............but with this administration..............Solyndra is an exception.

Or would you like to discuss Sun Power next. Or maybe we should discuss Wiskar

Do some studying then get back to me.

This is an issue I have with the elected officials who OK'd the taxpayer bailout.

Really? Then post 'half' of what you know about GM and taxpayer bailouts... I don't drive GM, but simply because I prefer a different manufacturer's product, because it works for me... Not because I need a cause to get behind.

I don't care. GM became a dead brand in my eyes the moment the government bailed them out and screwed over the stock holders. GM took the bailout and now they must live with the fact that a number of people will never buy their products again.

Besides which is better? Sending profits to a US based company who pays foreign workers to build it or a Japanese based company who pays US workers to build it? Prove me wrong but the amount of money sent overseas due to profits is very small compared to how much money from the sale of a new car goes towards pay for the workers, contractors, and taxes.

I hear you Crazyal my mother had stocks passed down from her father in the 1940's that were worth a small fortune now there not worth the paper they are printed on. She is an older lady and did not believe that what happed could happen and refused to sell them for peanuts.

That is a problem anyone could face with money invested in the stock market.

I am sorry to hear about your mothers bad fortune.
