Looked at a 75 Yanmar ym240D last week and I want to buy it except the rear brake was locked up when I looked at it. We ended up breaking it free with the diff lock engaged. Afterwards the tractor ran out really well.

Should I run from this or is this acceptable in 20degree weather. Also the brake pedals will not return after engaing them. Feels like the return spring is too loose/stretched. The brake pedals will return to normal position if you assist them with your foot.

If the right was locked up, you may well have broken the pinion gear in "freeing" it. It is not acceptable, and I would not touch it without making sure the right brake works. If it doesn't, it could be as simple as a broken brake shoe, or as complicated as a broken pinion gear. The tractor is powerful enough to snap this almost 1-1/4" thick piece of steel if the brake is solidly locked up (as in full of ice).

The differential lock was not intended to overcome a stuck or frozen brake, or to be engaged while one wheel is spinning. Using it in either situation creates a chance for peripheral damage.

The shaft that goes through brake shoe cover is froze up, remove the cover and free up the shaft.

Did a few searches and I believe it is metal loose in the rear diff. I'm staying away. Thanks!
