I just spent $300 on chains for my tractor. They were at the widest setting with the valve stems on the outside. These chains are pretty beffy and they will not fit without hitting the fender . There is also linkage underneath that it will interfere with. I did reasearch before I bought these and don't understand why they don't fit. Are my rims not the same as the other owners on this site. I did install the front chains but they do "touch" the steering knuckle a bit. I am at the end of my patience with trying to get my tractor some traction. This is really disappointing. What is different with my situation that will not allow me to install these chains. Can someone out there with a 4410 and chains installed explain to me what is wrong here. Thanks so much for any reply.

A few questions... what tire/rim combination do you have? R4's - R3's - R1's? Chains hitting the inside of the fender or the top of the fender?

Lot's of info here regarding various wheel spacers that help to address this problem (as well as stability concerns).

Also there are many discussions here on TBN about rim placement (reversing, etc.) or the rim setting's available with the 8-position rims (R1's).

Good luck.

I have a 4310, Maybe I can help.
First of all what type of tire, Industrial, turf or ag. are they a stock tire for the machine.
Next, you say the wheels are at there widest stance, are you sure? did you measure them? or did someone tell you they were. On my 4310 the difference is minimal but just enough to allow for the needed clearance.
I've not heard of anyone else who couldn't get the chains to work on my series machine, but everyone has had to flip the rims. the normally come narrow from the dealer, so I'm really hoping that's all it is.
Not sure about those valve stems, but when I flipped my rims the insides are not as pretty as the outsides, so in other words the nicer finish/paint is towards the inside now, I'll check the valve stems later, seem to remember the valves are on the outside normally, but I'm not sure.

I custom made mine, first because I got a deal on some surplus chain but also I was going nuts trying to spec out what exactly I needed.

Edit: I'm a slow typer so I didn't see Akfish's reply, it's almost the same, so you can see the importance of those rim's position. I'm kinda assuming you have the R-4's, there's no way you can just look at those and see witch side is deeper, that's how close they are. Again this is true for the 4310 hope it's not all different for 4410. End edit:

Thank you both for your quick reply. You must feel my concern. The tires are industrial R4's. My manual says that my 15 x 19.5 tires are at there widest when the valve stems are on the outside. I'll have to check that paint finish tomorrow. The chains are so heavy they would be scraping the inside of the fender as well as a clutch linkage underneath. The height is fine as I've often thought why the tires look so small. This is a stock tire to my knowledge. Curious what you meant by TBN. As far as my rims they are only 2 position and that would mean flipping them around.

Well I looked at my wheels tonight and when the wheels are flipped to the wide position the valve stems are to the INSIDE.

Also when in the wide position the inside of rim is flat, looking from outboard, and the inside has a raised hump that goes around the inner rim.

Also when in the wide stance, wheel size and manufacturer name is stamped on inner rim, visible from outboard.

Hope all's that wrong is wheel position.
Here's some pictures

You were absolutley right even though the manual said differently. I spun them around and got the 1" clearance I needed. I also flipped the front around as I didn't want to do damage to the steering knuckle. Thanks so much for all the trouble you went through investigating the problem JB4310 . Really appreciate the help. I can always count on this site to help with my questions and issues.

Glad to hear that's all set.

As far as the fronts go I took one off and turned it around just to see, but it looked crazy wide, to far out. So I left them narrow. Nothing scrapes on my fronts, but it does come close to the power steering cylinder in an extreme left turn, just miss's, I have to keep chains tight with no loose ends.

I have the same R-4 on my 4300, and was concerned about the spacing, even when flipping the wheels. And I couldn't find a tire chain that didn't drape far down onto the sidewalls. So I made my own, that would ride in the depression at the ends of the lugs. Meant longer side chains, and shorter cross chains. But they work well and give me plenty of clearance on the inside.
I changed the fronts too, and got used to the "look" and now use chains on them with no clearance problems.
Can see the chains on the front in my wing plow video.
