I am just about to take delivery on my new tractor. I am still trying to figure out a mower for it.

I need a mower for grass in my 50 acres of pasture. I have lots of "automowers", so i only I need to mow for maintenance, keep the blackberries from taking over, etc. While I am not after the biggest mower money can buy, I would like to go to at least 6' - I already have a 4' BushHog. I plan on keeping that for true bush hogging.

My dealer quoted around 1100.00 for a Deere 613. I hear its pretty flimsy, but is it OK for grass? What does it weigh? Is the LX6 the same thing, or is it improved?

I have looked at King Kutter, but I prefer something a little better...

I can go MidWest, but there are none around here. But even with shipping (I could bundle some other stuff) it is till a better buy than the stuff peddled by the locals. Come to think of it, I can buy the cutter and boxblade for what the Deere cutter was...

Unless the LX6 would be a better grass cutter for my 4310.

Then there are finish mowers... Since I have a bushhog, I could go that route, even though I am not looking for a golf course.

BTW, I have a wife and several daughters who will all be vying for seat time, so speed isn't really everything...

I have the 513 Deere rotary cutter and use it for brush. I modified mine to make it stronger in the back but that was because I did a lot of brush cutting by backing into the brush (to keep from having to push it over with my JD4300 and then drive on it before it was chopped up). This backing into, and knocking over brush, required a more substantial rear edge (curtain) than the factory edge.

But given you are not going to use it that way (from your explanation), I would say that the 613 would be more than adequate for your pasture maintenance.

If I were to buy today, I would take the LXx. It seems to be more rugged (blades however look longer than the 513) and apparently it comes with the chain guards. I would buy it compatible with the I-match and with the slip clutch. I would stick to the 5', as I would be using it in the woods to cut brush, and not just grass or small bush. Good luck on your decision.
