Hey does anyone have a clue what would cause the rear PTO to keep turning when not engaged on a JD 4200 HST? It is not indicating engaged, and it just turns slowly, but will stop with resistance. it will speed up with the engine running at higher RPM, but it still will stop with resistence. It works fine when engaged it is just a possible safety hazard. I kill the tractor before hooking anything up to it. but it is kind of a pain! I have tried the adjustment screw at the linkage with limited success. I would appreciate any advise or help with this problem.

I don't have a 4X00 series tractor, but I suspect that may actually be normal. It could be because of viscuous coupling by the hydraulic fluid causing it to turn. Some 4x4 vehicles do something similar, the front driveshaft will still rotate slowly (while driving down the road) even though the 4x4 was not engaged and the front hubs were unlocked. Maybe some other 4200 owners will in add their observations.

I do not have a 4200 but both my 3720 and 4320 will do this especially when the hst oil is cold. I wouldn't be concerned.

hey I appreciate the replys guys! I guess that makes sense, I know that my Hydro pedals stick in both forward and reverse when the tractor is cold, especially if it has set for a while.

i would say that is a normal condition as well,i have had other tractors that do the same thing and they were gear drive.i would'nt be worried about it.as far as the pedals sticking,i would'nt consider that to be normal, you may want to switch to a lighter viscosity fluid if it only does it when it's cold or after extended periods of sitting.

I have a 4400, it is the same tractor different engine. That is normal.

My 790's PTO rotates as well...slowly and stops with no resistance.
And this is a gear tractor, so the issue isn't limited to HST.

It works fine when engaged it is just a possible safety hazard.
I put them little plastic PTO covers on when I'm not using the rear or mid PTO. Keeps the grease on the splines too since mine lives outside.

How did you ever see it from the seat?

I noticed it while I was walking around the tractor while it was warming. The PTO wasn't engaged...that stub shaft just rotates a bit.
The real question to ask USMC.27 is how he knew it would stop with slight resistance...knowing he's a grunt, I'm sure he grabbed it.
(Sorry, USMC.27...Navy guy here and I know most jarheads would just grab the PTO shaft).
