Case DX40
I have a DX40 (TC40DA) with two sets of factory installed rear remotes. The machine is at about 200 hours. I use the remotes to power Woods brand Top and tilt cylinders.

The problem is that one set stopped working today. When I push the lever forward it works well (i.e. the ram extends), however when I attempt to pull the lever toward the rear of the machine I encounter immediate resistance to the degree that I cannot move the lever at all. the ram of course doesn't shorten. I cannot pull the lever back even with significant force. But when I do pull hard on the lever I can hear what sounds like minimal flow going through the circuit (but no movement of the ram).

This happened once before several months ago. After I shut the machine down for several hours, that same remote started working again like nothing happened.

Anyone have an idea on what might be awry?

Take the cover off the remote that covers the return spring and I think you'll see lots of rust. If that's it clean it up, give it a coat of Never Seize and put it back together.

This is what the assembly looks like with the spring exposed before & after being covered with Never Seize

Mike is right about using Never Seize. NS is the best thing that you can use on a valve with that problem. Just remember that when you use NS, it will get on everything.

Mike has given you a good suggestion for ensuring your remote valve is working properly. I don't think your description necessarily fits that problem. When my remote valve "gummed up" it was still working, it just would not return to neutral (open center) correctly. What Mike has suggested is certainly recommended, but here are some additional things to check.

1. Shut your tractor down so there is no hydraulic pressure. With the tractor off, move the remote valve control handle all the way forward and backward. If it's movement is smooth and does not stick, then the return spring is probably not causing the valve to stick.

2. Next, start the tractor and move the control so the hydraulic ram extends. Return the valve to neutral and go to the rear of the tractor. Swap the quick connects. Now get back on the tractor and push the handle forward. The hydraulic ram should now retract.

Here is what I think your problem may be. On our loaders, many folks have thought their loader was not working properly only to find that one of the remote quick-connects was not seated properly. I think it's possible that this is your problem, except in your case it's the rear remote not connected properly. By causing the hydraulic cylinder on your remote to extend, it puts the return side under full pressure. This causes the valve to lock so it cannot go to the opposite position. After the tractor sits for awhile, the pressure bleeds off and you can again operate the valve.

Essentially, I think you should reseat your remote quick connects. That just might be your problem. You did hook both hoses to the same circuit didn't you? This just sounds more like the symptoms you described. Not sure...

When you pull the lever that won't work right, does either hose going to that spool stiffen up?

Good points. Also.. Do you have the 'deluxe' remote pack? if so... it is pretty easy to disassemble the spool section and look for debri and rust.. etc.. which probably isn't your problem. I got real good at disassembling my spool pack earlier this year when i had a remote not working. unfortunately my problem turned out to be a permanent flaw in the spool block that could only be corrected by replacement.. and they ain't cheap..
