On a 744 or 749 has anybody tried a valve to shut off the rear steering temporarily, or do the need to work in unison? Maybe plumb a bypass? Purpose would be for roto tilling.

Since the power steering portion is handled up front you should be able to take off the drag link that goes to the rear and build yourself another drag link that mounts directly to the chassis keeping rear wheels straight. I THINK that would work, take a look at your linkage and let me know what you think.

The front to rear linkage is simple tierod variety not hydraulic. I can say this much, I use my Howard HR4 60" rotovator behind my x749 without issues. Works well enough for me and sees frequent use. The fact that the mower is AWS doesn't seem to matter, I would raise all tillers to turn around at end rows.

Thanks

Still toying around the idea of upgrading from my 455.

Looking at 740/744 or 748/749

In 16 years of owning my 455 I suppose I've maybe wanted 4wd a handful of times, but it sure would be nice.

Been thinking the 60" 7 iron deck is what I want thoiugh and this rules out 4ws. The 7 iron is supposed to be ideal for our wet heavy grass.

Also contemplating going back to a used 2008 model to get manual engage 4x4 for the simpolicity of things.

The problem I keep running into is that the 7 series is too rich for the folks in this part of the country so they are few/far between and dealer knowledge is poor at best.

The size itself is also a bit put off-ish as compared to my nimble and compact 455...

From what I could tell the x748 is the same length, width and height of the 455 but has a longer wheelbase, larger tires and higher cost.
The uncut radius for the x748 (33 inches)is much greater than the x749 (6 inches) and is very noticable if you have alot of trees to cut around. Big difference between a 5.5 ft circle and a 1 ft circle.

Still the 7 iron deck with a few trees would seem to be better imo if manuevering isn't an issue. I say this because while you can make a few three point turns and trim around the trees with the two wheel steer the grass clogging and lumps would be more trouble to deal with. This is really a judgement call, good luck with your choice.

Actually, the AWD system is simpler than the old manual 4X4 engaging system. Your removing a driveshaft, u-joints, additional bearings, and a front differential by going to the newer AWD system. The most complex piece of the newer AWD system is the proportioning valve that directs oil flow. The wheel motors in each hub of the front wheels will likely never wear out. If I had to choose, I would never take the old manual style. You have binding issues, and a lot more parts with it.

The 7 Iron deck is well worth it over AWS if you have to pick one. Going around obstacles quickly doesn't mean much if your deck is clumping and leaving piles of clippings.
