In our business, we sell 10 to 1 rear discharge for all the reasons listed by the other posters. The biggest advantage on side discharge is price. Usually expect side discharge to be from $100- to $200 less cost.--5 ft First Choice RFM shown below for reference-- Ken Sweet

purchased rear discharge that has gone back for warranty, they gave me a side discharge to use in the meantime. i really thought i wanted the side discharge until i used it. the rear is much better. cuts faster (i throw the clippings to the inside with the SD and it takes longer to go over the thicker grass) , i don't hit my trees with the RD, and the cut seems better.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have a Befco RD6 rear discharge and for the most part it does a great job but it seems to leave a little windrow at optimum cutting speed. Still trying to get an answer on that. I have a JD LX188 lawn tractor with side discharge and I have to put a bolt in a hole in the deck to hold up the safety deflector (I know!! I know!!) so that I get a fairly decent distribution of clippings. With the safety deflector down, it makes such a good high windrow I could bale it!!
