I would like to add some removable weight to the rear of the tractor to use when plowing etc. My local dealer told me that I would be looking at 1$ per pound. Didn't matter if it was wheel weights or suitcase weights. Does this sound high?

I have been watching auctions to find some old style IH suitcase weights but haven't found any yet, and I am needing ideas. Fluid in the tires is out because I use this for landscaping and don't want the extra weight when going across peoples yards. (also because nails from careless contractors can play heck on the tire)

I added wheel weights to the front of my NH by using the EZ Weights system. I don't recall the cost of the brackets, but I think it was about $40.00 for a set? I then added 100# of weight by using some left over bar stock that I drilled a 1" hole into the center of. I used the bar stock simply because I had access to it for free, but I could have also used old barbell weights, they are available at yard sales, swap meets and used sporting good stores for probably less 50-cents a pound or less. I know that the EZ Weights system can hold a few hundred pounds if that is enough weight for your needs. The weights are easy to remove if you ever need to work on the wheel/tire, simply loosen one nut.

The EZ Weight adaptor with old barbell weight plates is a good and simple way to go.

Another cheap way is to fabricate a weight box for your 3 pt hitch and just fill with whatever heavy junk you can come up with for free. You can do the box in wood, metal or some combination.

Weights and brackets from the dealer will be quite expensive. I would go with the EZ adaptor and save my money for another attachment that will do usefull work.

I have a weight box, but that doesn't help when I am plowing or doing other heavy draft chores. I looked at the ezweight system, and I think it may be a little light for my TC35. I says you can only add a max of 150lbs. per side. Do you think that will make a difference on a tractor of my size?

Make your own brackets. I made mine to where I could put on 4-50lb weights on each side. If your wheels are 24 in., you can use the 50lbs barbell weights. My brackets and weights.

I think that's about the normal price for genuine tractor weights from a tractor dealer, which is why so many tractor owners find cheaper ways that serve the same purpose. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Did you foam fill your tires? That will add a couple hundred pounds per tire (maybe more?).

What thickness of plate did you use?

I don't remember for sure, but I think that I just used 3/16". It could be 1/4". It has been about 4 years since I made them.

Yep.. NH suitcase weights are about a buck a pound.. I nearly fainted a few years ago when i had bought some and ordered them in without asking the price.. I figured that 'bulk' cast iron couldn't bee too much.. glad I only got two...

Sheesh.
