I saw some tractors from a new line and the rear wheels are offset from the shaft. Obviously the final gearing is done there. What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing that?

Don't know what line you are refering to and you did not say which direction the off set was. But there were a lot of "high crop" tractors built with the axle offset above the centerline of the wheels to get greater clearance for cultivating tall crops.
